This isn’t an Andrea Yates situation. She DID have doctors and help, she checked herself OUT of a hospital. She acted perfectly normal that day, went out and about with the kids and everything.

What could the husband have done? The legal system is 100% behind women when it comes to child custody. He could have tried all he wanted to keep the children away from this deranged bitch but a judge or court would have NEVER taken a woman’s kids away from her. Yes. Trying to find a bed in a mental health hospital for a person who needs it is incredibly difficult. There are only two state-run facilities in Louisiana, one in Jackson and one in Pineville. Prior to the Jindal administration, there were five.

If you talk to anyone who works with the homeless or transient population, they'll tell you that long-term supportive housing (that offers mental health treatment and other supportive services along with housing) is the primary need. Most, if not all, of those people have more than one mental illness and are incapable of maintaining employment or housing without long-term supportive care.

The Clancy case has reminded me of two other fillicide cases.

One is the case of Mark Hambrick. His wife was a professional aquaintance of mine. He and his wife lived in the Bywater. His wife was at work in Baton Rouge, he was home with his 18-month old daughter. He killed her, "at God’s direction. He did so, he told authorities and doctors who examined him, so the state would execute him, allowing for him to be resurrected." This happened 9 years ago. He was never found competent to stand trial and is still hospitalized at the state hospital in Jackson.

The other is from a podcast I listened to called Unrestorable about Catherine Hoggle. Her two children disappeared in 2014, and have never been found. She was the last person to be seen with them, and to this day, she has never told anyone what happened to them. She was arrested that year and was in a psychiatric hospital until 2025. When she was released, she was arrested on first-degree murder charges. She was indicted in 2017, but she was deemed incompetent to stand trial until 2025. Her diagnosis is paranoid schizophrenia.

I'm in the minority on this board and I do believe that she was experiencing psychosis when she committed this crime and that permanent placement in a mental health facility would be appropriate. I also disagree with the lunatic fringe standing outside the courthouse wearing pink. But I don't think that she should ever be released from the psychiatric hospital and I'm of the opinion that medical steps should be taken to ensure she is never able to have anymore children.
