Louisiana and Mississippi for control of the Mississippi River.
Texas for the sheer size of its population and for the oil.
Alabama and Florida to control the rest of the Gulf Coast.
Florida also gives us some leverage with the Northeast since we would hold all their parents and grandparents hostage

Your allies are at horrible indefensible positions and once they are wiped out it is done for you.

I would have Kirsten Dunst in Anchorman 2 rally all the folks who left LA after Katrina.
Unstoppable force.

Not enough detail to make a decision really.
If distance isn't a factor, Colorado, Texas, Washington, Missouri, and North Carolina.
You have mountains and Air Force in Colorado. Can hide and strike. Has a high population. Lots of hippies but also lots of people who would take up arms.
Washington gives access to the Pacific. Trade hub in Seattle. Tons of fun toting conservatives east of Seattle.
Texas. Obvious. Patriotic. Huge land mass with a ton of people who like to shoot shite. Lots of natural resources. Massive Port.
Missouri. Feed the army. Also very conservative. Also love to hunt. And in Missouri, the Ozarks provide a place to take refuge. Also has Army, Air Force and Marine Corps bases.
North Carolina. Access to the Atlantic. Major population centers. Army and special forces bases. Generally conservative. Mountains to the west to hide out.
If distance matters, and you want contiguous borders, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee and Alabama. Mississippi would beg to join thereafter. Missouri probably would too.

Having Redstone Arsenal pretty much requires Alabama to be on this list.

If Texas isn't your first pick, you fricked up.
Regardless of parameters.
The rest are highly situational.

I'm surprised only one took Missouri after 4 pages.
Even if only for the Spirits.
I mean more people took Kansas for fricks sake.
The only strategic element of Kansas is that no one could care enough about them to invade in the first place.

There are a frickload of conservatives/gun owners /farmers in California not to mention lots of military bases. It would definitely be more beneficial than a small population southern or Midwest state.

California, who the frick would want California on their team to defend this country? With the exception of Pendleton and 29 Palms, that state is a shithole of liberal bullshite.
California has more registered republicans than the population of Louisiana

Louisiana is too french, so they surrender too quickly.

So in a war, you pick a state with some of the most restrictive gun laws on the books... smart

I feel like you want a close center, lots of land area, lots of people, natural resources, financial power, highly motivated people, and strategic landscape.
Texas is a no brainer. Oil, port, weapons, wealth, high population, nice mix of cities and desolate area. Plenty of military installation.
Louisiana is also a bit of a homer pick. Economically, population, and size...it doesn't help. But it does have oil, control of the Mississippi, and some frickers who will shoot to kill.
Colorado has a mountainous region and the Air Force. The Rockies can be a great strategic location for fighting and defense. I feel like it's close enough to Texas to keep a center of power, and taking over New Mexico and Wyoming shouldn't be too difficult with their lack of man power.
I feel like it's crazy to leave out California. Sheer numbers and it's location on the coast add so much. The state is pretty divided between red and blue, and Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and San Diego are great areas for trade. I think between a triangle of California, Texas, and Colorado, you could take over the entire West.
My wild card is Michigan. It's away from my center of power, but offers another international border, Great Lakes as a means of transportation during war. That leads to the St Lawrence which can be used to get to the Atlantic.
In all, plenty of land area and people. You have oil, access to water, farmable land, high money sectors and cities in Houston, Austin - San Antonio, DFW, Denver, and the large California cities. You have plenty of opportunities for trade, strategic military installations, and highly secret stations.

Not technically a state. But Washington DC, obviously.

These threads always bring out the baws who've never left the southeast, maybe even LA. Amazing how many people think the north is one giant liberal city. You'll find just as many gun nuts up there in central PA and upstate Ny, Maine etc as you will in LA

It would be damn near impossible for an army to trudge through the swamps without getting lost... It's a massive home field advantage for coonasses... defend the river, and any invading army is a sitting duck stuck in the mud... block off some bayous with fallen trees and funnel them into a death zone... like i said, massive home field advantage
Add in control of the river, population of outdoorsmen proficient in guns and their familiarity with the environment, and it's a no brainer
