Penn, new hamp, Delaware, mass, and new York...

Those guys have experience!

Really though:
Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Tenn, and Missouri (Kentucky could pass as well).

The reason why: the Mississippi River. You can use the Missouri and Arkansas rivers as well as Tenn and Ohio rivers to ship all manufactured goods to all five of those States as well as food. We can do this without the worry of what happens to our Aviation forces. It is also a good central part of this country so if the states around us all get taken over, we have a good slice in the middle. Not happy about fighting a two sided war, but can get your forces to head West to take more states because I would imagine the Invaders would quickly try to take washington dc and start from there.

Gotta control that river--Davis missed that
Speaking of missing things, can you correctly count to Five?

Generals always fight the last war.

With the new tools of warfare, you'd want rough, hard-to-cover terrain and maximum acreage.

The American Northwest has that, screw the Land Mass, most of the population there now can't pour piss out of a boot. For every good old boy you've got a couple of folks who are illiterate and have a sorry work ethic.

In a Wyoming? Or a Montana? Or a Idaho?
Less proportion of lazy, spoilt dumbasses and a better work ethic.

My originals were ID, UT, MT, WY & ND,
Reconsidering I might swap ND out for WA, OR, or AK
