The ironic thing is that Texas and LA are being invaded more and more everyday

Depending on who the invaders are,
Strategically I would take Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. you have access to the Atlantic and the Gulf. We easily march through Mississippi and take it over to control the whole Southeast.

Don't forget that CA is a top-5 oil producing state and #1 in agriculture dollars.

Cali has way to many in the wagon instead of helping pull it, they'd roll over in a heartbeat and not fight.

I want the redneck brigade.
Texas
Louisiana
Mississippi
Alabama
Georgia or Florida
Enough guns, ammo, and oil to beat the rest of the US.

I'm assuming I am in Louisiana, so I am picking 5 other states as allies.
Texas, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee
With these 5 states as allies you could easily take Mississippi from 3 sides and gain a 7th state.
Then you funnel your enemy south through Florida and take an 8th state.
Stabilize and start working your way into new territories.

You are going to have the smallest army in history. Damn close to the 5 least populous states

Without looking it up, I'm fairly confident you listed the fattest states in the US. Sounds like a smart move for a ground war.

I'll have interconnected states with highway system. Access to the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico along with Mississippi River. Two of the largest economic engines, unbelievable food production and fastest growing populations in the country. I'm going to control everything coming out of Mexico into the US and everything from Canada & US into Mexico. We are going to have oil and gas including the largest natural gas export terminal with pipeline coming to us.
My alliance has the most corporate headquarters. Guns, ammunition and military installations including major Navy, Marine, Army and Air Force Bases.
*** I would have negotiating power with Canada and Mexico possibly helping supply my troops, or even helping fight on our behalf.

All isolated though.
I would prefer interconnected states with population, industry, military and resources
