great pics. I've always heard we treated European POWs really well. Neat pic of them in the cathedral.

I really like the one of St. Charles with the two cars. 1910.

ask any old timers in acadiana about the germans....

Pretty interesting really, especially considering how barren most areas look in the old photos.

Look at all the double shotgun houses throughout the city - most built in the 19th or early 20th century. A lot of them are now converted to singles and occupied by individuals, couples, or maybe one or two child families. In the 30s there was probably mom, dad, and 4-6 kids on EACH SIDE.

Those guys ventilated the frick out of that racist a-hole.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I recently read a book, A Terrible Thunder(?), about Mark Essex and his sniper attacks. I was surprised to find out that he was universally regarded as a nice, friendly, hard working guy by everyone who knew him in his hometown of Emporia, KS and at his job as a dental tech at NAS Imperial Beach. He was racially harassed so much by white sailors outside of work, in the barracks and mess hall, that he eventually went AWOL/UA and returned to KS. After about a month, he returned to post and accepted the formal discipline he received at Captain's Mast or court martial (can't remember which). Harassment continued and he received an early discharge. That's when Mark Essex started hating white people.

I'm not defending his actions on NYE, 1970('71?) and in Jan., '71('72?), but I was surprised to read that the guy didn't appear to have a radical or racist bone in his body until he was constantly fricked with in the Navy.

And FYI - when this pic was taken, Essex had been dead for about 16 hours. The guys in the pic are about to open fire on a steel door. If you watch the YouTube video, you can see several of them fall as they are wounded by their own ricochets.

Without reading, I'd bet my 401k there are already folks posting pics of crime, black folks and/or just bashing New Orleans in general

Of course, but not as many as I expected. The normal nimrods who hate New Orleans and never want to visit again show up to post in every New Orleans thread for some reason.

It was a new experience, things happen.

Too bad it wasn't 16 years.

The Essex incident gave rise to modern police swat tactics

Just like desert one / eagle claw gave rise to a dramatic improvement in US counter and ain't terror ops.

A guy who coached me that fall - one of the guys shot was his uncle .....

poboy history

My grandfather, now deceased, said when he was a poor kid in New Orleans in those days it was always a piece of ham or maybe turkey in the sandwich. He said the roast beef and fancy stuff didn't come along until many years later.
