ICE has been out in full force in the Monroe/West Monroe issue. I’m all about getting out illegals. No if’s ands or buts.

However, it makes me wonder if ICE has too much leeway. A West Monroe high school student is currently detained even though they are here legally. You won’t find this on the news, but even the mayor of Monroe, Friday Ellis is speaking out on it. Here’s his Facebook post about what is known currently.

“What we know, or what has been presented so far….. is that the young man and his family came here through the asylum process and were granted asylum. They were issued federal identification and Social Security cards, allowing him to legally work, attend school, and remain in the United States while his immigration case proceeds. From what we’ve been told, that process can take years.

What we also know is that he presented his government-issued identification but did not have his Social Security card with him at the time. Within hours, that documentation was produced, along with paperwork showing he had been granted asylum and was lawfully in the immigration process. Yet days later he’s still being detained.”

I’m kind of surprised we don’t have a way to quickly resolve issues with the detainment process. We have a high schooler that had their Real ID on them. He wasn’t carrying his social security card on him but it was given to officials within hours of being detained. He and his family are here legally and there is no evidence they missed any hearings or meetings.

What are your thoughts on this situation? I also wonder how often this happens since it doesn’t make the actual news.

Longer update on Page 5.

Short version update: While leaving work and as he was sitting in his vehicle, a West Monroe Police Officer asked him for his identification. He provided his Real ID and the officer ran it in his system. He cleared Anderson to go. An ICE agent then appeared and asked for his ID and if he was legally in the country. He said yes, and handed him his ID. He was asked for his social security card. He provided a picture of it on his phone. The ICE agent said he was good-to-go. Then, before he could leave, another ICE agent asked to see it also. That ICE agent said he thinks it could be fake. He is now detained because of it. No other reason from what we can tell. His ID and his social security card are in fact, real it seems. If they are, and this is what actually happened, I'm against it.

My thoughts are that I would want to see all of the pertinent facts before jumping to a finalized conclusion. Not saying ICE is right or the kid and his family are right but I've seen far too many cases where people jump to a conclusion only for the facts to be a bit different when they all come out.

So, we are just assuming that illegals will tell the truth when/if their asylum has been revoked?

ICE is tearing Monroe a new one right now. Ain't nobody getting their yard did or house cleaned. They took out the sushi place and a handful of Messican restaurants too. It's pandemonium

I question the validity of the source. She has flat out lied in other stories, mainly about a good friend's wife. She trusts the source as 100% true because she wants likes and views. Labels herself a "community watch dog". If what she is reporting is true, it's a massive misuse of force and the kid should NEVER have been taken into custody.

History has taught us that giving any police force ever too much leeway results in widespread abuse of power.

People look the other way with ICE specifically because they don't think the abuse will happen to them personally.

I live in West Monroe... I think all this is dumb... They obviously are holding him for a reason... People just want their 15 mins of fame...I'm glad ICE is cleaning up our area! I hope they bust every employer hiring illegals...! THEY ALL NEED TO GO

Yes, that is what everyone is doing. It's going to be funny when this kid and his family turn out to be in fact illegal.

That's a pretty sweeping generalization.

I think mass, indiscriminate detentions and deportations are a bad idea. I know I am in the minority here with that take.

People want mass detentions and deportations, and with that comes disruptions to everyday life for everyone. Time will tell if all of the promised benefits are true or not.

People are such prisoners of the moment. Trump ran on all of the things you listed and people voted for him to do so because they knew the Biden era immigration policy was a disaster and now, people wanna cry because you have to crack a few eggs to make an omelet? What did people think was gonna happen?

All it took to shake the resolve of the people is a couple videos on X and they abandon their opinions.

How do you propose we address the mass immigration issue if deportations are a bad idea? Should we just accept the fact that millions upon millions of non-citizens are roaming our streets and communities disrupting our normal way of life?

I don’t know the situation outside of your post without any links, but Temporary Protections can be removed and asylum claims can be rejected. Just because Biden’s Autopen gave legal status to fraudulent asylum claims does not mean they aren’t illegally in the country now after staying when told to leave or that these people get to stay regardless of what some judge appointed by Biden’s Autopen will claim to slow down deportations to a crawl.

Real ID is basically now worthless due to Biden’s Autopen when it comes to many illegals. It took 20 years to implement and was out of date as soon as it started as it was voted into law before the asylum temporary protections fraud of Biden’s Autopen and the earlier fraudulent asylum claims waved in under Obama.

No Dem judges have too much leeway, and Biden’s Autopen had too much leeway.

It's classic nirvana fallacy. The current solution is not a perfect one so people criticize it in favor of a theoretically better one even though they cannot articulate what that solution is. If you ask them, they'll respond with vague platitudes but nothing of substance. "Well, there has to be a better way," or "If I was in charge, I'd make sure we didn't get the wrong people." Nothing will be tangible in their recommendation but you always get to take the moral high ground when you can spit out hypothetical solutions instead of real ones.

frick that, no asylum....deport his arse too. Asylum from what? Unless it legit that they were being hunted by the cartels or they where fighting for the opposite political party in a country like venezuela then wtf are they claiming asylum from? being from a poor country and looking for a better life doesnt mean you get Asylum.

no more immigrants period for 5 years. deport as many as possible in that time.

and as far as this incident...if they only went by what they were told, ICE wouldnt deport anyone. and under biden many illegals got DL in plenty of states.

Are they Haitians? If so, they have been here for over 15 years on a 'temporary visa," but their TPS has been revoked by Trump and the revocation upheld by the SC.

Tell them to go make their country better.

I stated I know my opinion is the minority. I thought it was a bad idea then, and do now. Now that said, one bad idea was better than a whole campaign platform of bad ideas Kamala had.
