We trimmed about 30% of the smaller branches a few months back. Have just a few branches on the ground, nothing big down. Dodged a bullet as I usually don't mess with them.

It makes me wonder if there is anything you can do to help trees like that out before an ice storm? Using ratchet straps around where the trunk forks out to give it some extra stability?

Just read that ice and increase the weight of a branch 30 times. Not much you can do to stop half an inch of ice from snapping branches 50 feet in the air.

It just depends on where exactly it is. I went through Llano yesterday and, while there was some ice in trees, it wasn't heavy and I didn't see many limbs on the ground. Hwy 16 north of Llano was a little heavier. Hwy 71 to Brandy wasn't bad at all. It's very weird how spotty the damage was.

Thanks. It turns out my cousin is up there now. He said it’s not too bad. All the senderos are clean. We’ve been needing to clean out some spots for a while anyway.

They are escarpment live oaks (quercus fusiformis) rather than southern live oaks (quercus virginia) that Louisiana has

Mother Nature is trimming trees for you, baw. Not what you want but no other way to look at it. We’ve been fortunate west of Austin about 90 miles that it hasn’t been as bad as 2021. Of course, we missed out on any decent moisture this go round.
