These threads and all of the incredible data, imaging, and forecasting always make me think about what it must have been like 100 years ago for coastal communities. No warning. “Honey, it looks like rain today”

They had some warning. Ships reported conditions. They had telegraphs. They also were more attuned to the signs from nature, birds flying and such. Columbus recognized enough signs to know some major crap was heading his way and found a safe location (unlike some of the other ships captains) and no European had ever seen a hurricane at that time.

BTW, shortly before landfall tomorrow, we will likely create an Information Only Thread, and keep this one as the Observation Thread.

For those that don't know, the Information thread will be just that - a place for people to post info, post if they need any help, have any relevant questions, and other news that may be important to those affected.

Those that make joking posts or anything other than information posts will have theirs deleted. If they persist, then they will get banned.

The Observation thread will likely remain this one, and is where it can be relaxed.

Most of the people down there were working class or retirees and underinsured. So their 1970’s bungalow got wiped out and instead of retiring by the ocean they had to move because they couldn’t afford to rebuild with the new hurricane codes. Was really sad hearing some of their stories. A lot of what’s going up now looked to me to be out of state rental type houses, that town will never be the same.

It’s already changed so much. My entire extended family goes for a few weeks every summer and this year, it’s just so different. We loved that it wasn’t touristy, you could just go chill and have an e enjoyable time at the beach and not sit in hours of traffic. Low key, family time. I honestly think it will end up like every other beach town in the panhandle now. I hate it for the working class that lost their dream, it’s going to be a wealthy playground now

Well, it was Puerto Rico last week that had no power. Guess it is Cuba's turn.

Can some people still post updates in the relaxed thread too? For those of us ridiculous people who will stay here?

Go to the NHC site and find Hurricane Michael . It has everything from the charts and when it started. Nobody predicted what that hurricane became

TD was way ahead of the NHC on that storm as I recall.

There were people acting like I was crazy when I was telling them they needed to be concerned right up until Jim Cantore was rolling through 30A and PCB.
