You know it's a major hurricane when they bring out Dr. Beverly Crusher.

Is she Prego or just a field grazer?

Is it me or does it look like it rides up the coast a little bit on the latest GFS? It seemed earlier that it was going to make landfall near Tampa and ride up the middle of Florida.

One thing worth watching is there's a subtle tough at 250-mb not seen at 500-mb. If Ian continues rapidly strengthening and becomes more vertical to where it feels the flow at 250-mb better the streamlines into the 250-mb trough will nudge Ian slightly WNW and closer to the trough. It won't be a big shift west but it will send it slightly farther up the Florida coast and could be the difference between big bend and Tampa for landfall.
One reason why the GFS ensembles differ in sending Ian towards big bend and deterministic GFS sends it close to Tampa.
Trough at 250-mb into the western Gulf
Not seen at 500-mb

Is there an official cone? I thought once it officially became a hurricane they had to put out a cone.
Yes the official OT cone is scheduled to be released by Peej this evening.

Sam Lillo @splillo This is far from breaking news, but the SHIPS rapid intensification probabilities for #Ian are truly exceptional. Astronomical 79% probability that Ian becomes a category 4 hurricane in just 36 hours.
The scary part of this, is that it’s hard to predict intensity. It could very well reach cat 5, or may never reach 4. Depends on so many factors and if or when it undergoes EWRC

I hope he had to detour because a mouse built a nest in his chase vehicle.
ETA: I just don't want to see him almost taken out by another 757 being snatched from the sky again. It is a safety issue, really.
