I’d buy a Laco off eBay at that price range.

Some of those Laco's are sharp looking.

What is ugly about this watch in your opinion?

IMO I can not stand open heart watches that are not tourbillons and even then I am very selective on the ones that are acceptable to me. There is also the asymmetry and the cutoff subdials. But as I suggested before you could likely browse through my collection and only a few of them would satisfy your eye.

If the Fossil moves you more than others in your budget buy it, I always say wear what you love. That said you can get better quality watches in your price range but if they don't make you want them it really doesn't matter.

I'm not necessarily interested in that fossil. I was more just curious what made it ugly in the mind of someone who has a more refined taste. Of course the Omega's look gorgeous. I just have a real hard time spending that much money on something that I can't ride or shoot.

What kind of watch interests you. The Fossil was kinda sorta a dress watch and the Omega's shown here are divers which you also seem to like.

Invicta watches look good, they’re durable and appear to be well made and they’re very affordable on Amazon.

I lean more towards dress watches, But a good looking diver is perfectly acceptable.

This is one of my favorite dress watches in your price range. It is the Seiko SRB43 Cocktail "Sky Diving", not to be confused with the SARB065 Cocktail time which is very similar but a little more money. Get this and replace the band (or not) and you will have one of the sharpest dress watches in the range and most any watch nut will doff their cap to your choice.

ETA if you like open-heart movements like the Fossil you showed take a look at the Tissot Powermatic 80 open heart. It is also available with a black dial in can be found in your price range.

It's not objectively ugly, it's subjectively ugly to me. I'm sure you could find some Fossil that looks fine to me, but in general I think they're kind of cheap looking and very imitation-driven.

The one you posted wouldn't make me go "wow that sucks", but it very much looks like they're trying hard to create an expensive-appearing watch but failing. I don't like the brushed stainless and the rose gold/gold markers/hands at all. I also think the roman markers are too big for this particular version. It just looks like they're trying to cram too many features from nice watches instead of building a solid design from the ground up.

IMO the navy band version is an improvement from a design standpoint. It's the least forced and most cohesive of the model you picked IMO.

for a cheap diver it’s hard to beat Orient.
Wow, these look great for the price.

Battery? Solar? What makes them tick?

Orient has both quartz (battery-powered) and mechanical automatic movements. Automatics use your arms movement to wind a mainspring that powers a traditional all mechanical movement.

Mechanical movements are in most all "expensive" men's watches but aren't necessarily superior depending on your criteria.

Well, they ain't sapphire but they do fine for most people unless you wear it as a beater. I have plexi/hesalite crystals with no blemishes and sapphire with gouges in them. I have one beater with a mineral crystal and it looks like you actively tried to destroy it. If you beat on a watch get sapphire if not then mineral glass/Hardlex is fine. In the OPs price range sapphire is harder to find and means other things have been sacrificed for its inclusion.
