Without scouring the countless threads and posts about watches on this forum. What are some good brand recommendations for the $200-$400 range?

I'm no watch expert, but I can't shake Fossil watches for their looks. I think they look great but I seem to recall them getting a lot of shite from people who are knowledgeable about watches.

Should I skip Fossil all together and stick with the likes of Citizen and Seiko? (What about Tommy Hilfiger brand?)

Depends on the type of watch, but for a cheap diver it’s hard to beat Orient.

Just buy yourself a solid Seiko until you decide to get serious.

Go with the Seiko SKX007 until you can afford something better like an Omega Seamaster.

Save your money and get a serious watch in a year or two. It's what I did when I was starting out and never regretted the decision. Find one you really like in the $3,000 range and put money aside for it. When you reach the goal, buy it and years from now you will look back on that investment and cherish the work it took to get it.

Ugh, I'm too cheap to spend this much on a watch. What are the real benefits of a watch in this price range?

Check out Holzkern. They are in your price range and it’s a good looking watch.

Never mind. Get a swatch, you have earned it.

In that price range a Seiko, Orient or Citizen. Seiko would be my first choice especially some of the JDM only offerings but I don't know what type of watch you want. I would include some of the micro-brands at the price point but those require research which you seem to want to avoid.

Fossil and TH watches are primarily "fashion watches" which is indeed a pejorative. Ralph Lauren, however, makes some excellent watches.

Why are you being a bitch?

The guy told you his price range and what he can afford. Nothing wrong with more expensive watches, but that doesn't appear to be his thing. If you don't have any recommendations for him in his price range just stfu.

It's a serious question from a non-watch guy. What are the actual benefits of a $3,000 watch vs a $400 watch? Is it just more accurate time keeping? Like maybe having to re-set the watch once a year vs once a month?

Browse r/Watches if you ever want to feel like a peasant.

(For the record, you could probably get some good recs there too)
