Another Seiko I really like are the Presage Cocktail ”Fuyugeshiki” Limited Editions. The time and date version is the SRPC97J1 and can be found for a little more than your budget. I find them stunning in person and they have the general look of the highly regarded Grand Seiko "Snow Flake" a compltely different class of watch (retail $5800) and will include a dial closeup after the SRPC watches.

Go with the Seiko SKX007 until you can afford something better like an Omega Seamaster.
Bingo. This all day. And there are tons of other options such as the Speedmaster which I personally love

What are the real benefits of a watch in this price range?
Being able to tell someone you own a watch in this price range.

That Tissot is very nice. especially if in black.

Tissot or Citizen
Didn't care to read the whole thread, but if the OP hasn't given any additional information about what he's looking for that would be helpful.
Metal band? Leather? Waterproof? Time dial only or more features? etc.
I prefer a metal band with a bit more going on on the watch face itself. A watch like this can be worn for formal, casual, you can get it wet without ruining the band...

What is funny is this is a Swatch
I'm sure you already know, but... Swatch Group is a huge conglomerate that owns many of the biggest watch brands and is also a swiss company that carries its own amount of weight in the watch world.
I have a fun sistem51 swatch that I own. It isn't anything high end for sure. It was an cool endeavor by the company that most people who aren't into watches for pretentious reasons would find passably interesting.
Swatch should be a respected name to watch aficionados and is actually in some ways very historically important.

I just got this in yesterday and love it.
Serica W.W.W.
I’m just dipping my toes into watches, so not an aficionado. Only complaints I’ve seen online about this watch is 1) manual wind w/ screw down crown (it’s waterproof) and 2) mineral crystal. Neither of those bother me personally though.

Odd that’s a hand wound movement watch, cool though. Be careful with those threads.

I assume it was done in the name of cost, and also ease of service. It’s an ETA 2801-2 movement and costs < $600.

Most hand-wounds that I’ve looked at didn’t have the central second hand. I like the big Unitas 6498...I’ll find one in the perfect case one day.

Pretty neat vintage field watch homage. I think it has a ETA 2801-2 or the Sellita clone in it. Manual wind makes sense for an homage of a watch of that era. I do like that you chose the broad arrow hands.

I have one beater with a mineral crystal and it looks like you actively tried to destroy it.
I would like to know what watch Obtuse wears for a beater. Mid 90's Submariner?

quote:it looks like a black guy's watch
As someone not familiar with watches beyond Casio, Seiko, Citizen, etc. I would think this is a sharp looking watch if I saw it on someone.
What is objectively ugly about this?
the kind of black guy that might be interested in tommy hilfiger watches and big horse polos

I agree with all of this. And price should tell us if it's a ETA or Sellita. And if you look at a picture of them the Sellita has about 5 times more juice in the rotor bearing. So really it's half a dozen of one and six of the other. That's without modifications of any.

I can't believe the Omega Speedmaster Pro doesn't get more love around here. It's iconic.

Thanks very much for your contribution. I'm going to be giving very hard consideration to the Seiko Presage and the Tissot Powermatic Open Heart in black.
