It's a serious question from a non-watch guy. What are the actual benefits of a $3,000 watch vs a $400 watch? Is it just more accurate time keeping? Like maybe having to re-set the watch once a year vs once a month?

Value from a watch can come from a bunch of different areas. Some watches are "Chronometer certified", guaranteeing that they will keep watch within a certain time. But realize that most $10 quartz watches can keep better time than many $10k automatic or manual watches.
Some watches have jewelry value. Some have name value. Some have special features.

Go with the Seiko SKX007 until you can afford something better like an Omega Seamaster.

I went with the 009 years ago and wear it daily on nato bands. Still saving up for the Omega.

I like Citizen and Seiko. Both are quality and you can get some for ~$100 on up. The Citizen Eco makes a really great sub $300 daily.

If you think Fossil watches look good then you should get one, because -

A) it's what you want and you should own what appeals to you; and
B) you're a lost cause anyway if you think Fossil watches look great and are asking about Tommy Hilfiger.

Walmarks or Target has what you need. Sams Club carries some in that range.

I would say Seiko. Probably best known for their Divers in this price range (SKX...), but the dress watches look great as well. I personally would get a watch with an automatic movement.

I got a VAER Field Hunter w/ leather band ($209) back in May and absolutely love it. I'm rough on my gear and have worn this hunting, kayaking, fishing, hiking, etc... and it shows no signs of slowing down. It also came with 2 nylon straps that I change out when I anticipate getting wet. I really love the look, fit and finish of the watch. Highly recommend.

I have one on a nato that is my "rough environment" watch. Going offshore, doing any kind of dirty work I don't want my daily involved with and it gets pulled out. It is indestructible.

I’d buy a Laco off eBay at that price range.

Automatic at the higher end, or quartz at the low.

Had a friend buy a yellow gold, green dial, Daytona last week...amazing the mark up on that brand now. Almost $10k above MSRP, and that’s nothing for the steel ones. The $12k panda looking steel one goes for $27k.

It's hard to discern what's worthwhile in this age of kickstarters and "craft/boutique" watch companies popping up constantly on social media/huckberry, etc.

but I do like the styling of that Vaer

I feel bad about it, but all of my watches sit in a drawer 90% of the time while the Apple Watch does the heavy lifting.

So expanding on your point a bit and as someone who obviously doesn't like Fossil.

What is ugly about this watch in your opinion?

As someone not familiar with watches beyond Casio, Seiko, Citizen, etc. I would think this is a sharp looking watch if I saw it on someone.

What is objectively ugly about this?

Agree 100%. The leather band is nice and the fit and finish were good so I felt like for $200 it was worth a shot.

I wear it everyday to work (jeans or khakis and a polo attire) and every day I'm outside pursuing my hobbies so it gets a lot of run.

It isn't the watch I'm putting on if I'm going to a wedding or funeral, but I've got nicer stuff for that already. I'm hopeful the VAER doesn't turn out to be garbage and so far so good.

What type of watch do you want? Dress, diver, pilot, military, chronograph etc. Do you care if it is a mechanical movement or are you fine with quartz? There is no reason to spend more than $400 if that is what you are willing to budget. Watches are very personal, you could probably look at my collection and only see a few that would interest you and likely they would not be the most expensive ones. If you buy a less expensive watch and get hooked so be it, I did many years ago, but in all likelihood, you will never be interested in spending thousands of dollars on a watch and there is nothing wrong with that and don't let anyone tell you that you can't get a solid watch in that price range.

I've found Seiko, Pulsar and Citizen to be perfectly good.

Tommy Hillfiger is no better than guess, fosil, etc.

Find one with a Japanese movement; those will be fine.

That's a nice looking piece. Glad I checked this thread.

Mostly I came to suggest you stay away from the bottom of the line Seiko 7 automatics. They look like a steal at under $75.00, but they are awful watches. Go into the $150.00 and up range if you get a Seiko automatic.
