Of course things were different back then.
They never gave us water in practice. Standing out in broad open sun in Louisiana in August with full pads and helmet from 2-6 (all football players took PE last period to get around limits on after school practice time). Only one 2 minute water break halfway through practice where we would go suck on the side of a big pvc pipe that had a bunch of holes punched in it.
If you passed out they called you a pussy.

Ahh, fond memories of KNWD, the Demon.
I found out Kurt Cobain was dead because KNWD's DJ came out of a song and said 'Breaking news: Kurt Cobain is now achieving room temperature.'

NLU was a very popular destination for high school kids in Shreveport during the 80s. Much more so than Tech; girl to guy ratio was higher at NLU.
I hope we get the pharmacy program when they finally turn the lights out over there.

I’m obviously a hater of that school in Monroe but KNLU was the greatest radio station ever from the late 80’s to around 2000. It was the real deal.
Honorable mention goes to the Warbonnettes. Not bad.

I began my checkered career in radio at 91.7 KNWD. Still have a couple of their old bumper stickers.

I did the honors when Muddy Waters died, although I didn't use that phrase.

Which Podunk? I went to basketball camps there and at LaTech.

Why'd they change it? I can't say. I guess they liked it better that way.

Ahh the good ol' days...
I started NLU in the Fall of 1987. Attendance was up, the school was financially in the black, men's and women's were strong (men's would eventually make it to multiple first-rounds in the NCAA tourny, women's team was at the end of its tourny runs but still strong), baseball was hit-n-miss and the football team would win the 1-AA Division Championship.
I lived in Olin Hall and called Johnny's Pizza so often they knew me by my order. My best friend lived on the back side of Olin, we would watch the ski team practice on their ramp.
Flash-forward to the coming of Lawson Swearingen in 1991. By the time he left in 2001 the school was financially in the red, attendance was dropping, the sports teams were generally impaired (some more than others) by his ridiculous push to Division 1-A, morale was down among the employees due to his divide-and-conquer method of management (along with the financial woes) and it was down among the student body due to the recent name change as well as the constant stream of negative news coming out about the university (due to Swearingen's crappy job).
James Cofer had more than enough to deal with then he took over. He did a remarkable job in reversing as much of the utter shitstorm Lawson created.
The NLU/Tech games were classics. There's an avenue ULM/ULL could pursue since they could both use a good rivalry, but I doubt it would happen (my idea has been for a "Louisiana Bowl" where the winning team would be called "University of Louisiana" for the next year, until they played again).
Lawson's desire to carry water for USL on the naming issue (USL wanted the University of Louisiana name but the Board of Regents wanted to duplicate the LSU system with a UL one so they mandated that another university had to go in with USL on the deal) was due to his delusions of grandeur in wanting to be President of a more prestigious sounding "state" university rather than just some podunk regionally named one. This also drove him in the disastrous move of taking the college from 1-AA to 1-A.
It didn't lead him to raiding various funds to use as his slush funds though, he did that all on his own.

Never went to school there but growing up in a little po dunk town in Northeast Louisiana, NLU was the thing back in the day. The games were a big, fun draw, especially those games against Louisiana Tech.
When the name changes occurred they killed part of the soul of that place along with the pride, history, and enthusiasm.
ULM is just dumb.

Yeah, back in the day NLU was a popular destination for kids who didn't go to LSU. It had a number of strong academic programs. As a student, I was involved w/ the Student Government Association at NLU when the proposed University of Louisiana name change first came up; IIRC it was strongly supported by USL. It was offered to NLU and the other UL system schools at that time; everyone at NLU laughed at the proposal. It was my understanding then that many at USL thought of themselves as a co-flagship university w/ LSU of the state. I thought ULL would eventually try to brand themselves as "The University of Louisiana." Lawson Swearingen replaced Dr. Vines as president of NLU and championed the name change to ULM and the rest is history. I remember when USL first changed their name to ULL and ESPN would broadcast the scores of their games as ULaLa. A friend of mine has a son who's a student at ULL. If you go to the campus you'll see all the banners and signs say, "University of Louisiana" in huge letters.......w/ "Lafayette" in tiny letters at the very bottom or not at all. The school's website, www.louisiana.edu, doesn't even have the word Lafayette in it.
I feel no obligation to donate to the the Alumni Association at ULM. First they changed the name, then they changed the mascot.

Yea. They really were a good school behind Tech. Great rivalry. Caving to SJW’ism is just weak. Would be cool to bring NLU back and renew the I-20 rivalry.

You are damn right! Was an DJ there from ‘89 to ‘91 and it absolutely had the best rotation of music ever. Classic college alternative and classic rock mix with something for everyone. Have very fond memories of Donny the Christmas Eve show a couple of those years. Finished on air at midnight, poured myself another charter and coke and fifteen minutes later we were on air again for an hour or so with a Cult mini concert. Cowboy Jim Payne from BTE was also there at the time.
My first year at NLU was 1987 and winning the 1AA championship was fun. I don’t like the move away to ULM but they have done some great work recently rebranding to ULM with the new logo. Starting to win my support back. Hope they keep it up.

My understanding is that from a purely financial perspective a 50pt road loss at Auburn or Clemson nets considerably more money than a packed house at Malone against a team they might beat. But going into a season with your highest hopes being a 6-6 record and a shot at some off-label bowl game just sucks all the joy out of it. I can remember a decent tailgating scene once upon a time. Obviously not comparable to any of the SEC venues but still a lot of fun. But the grove is now the School of Osteopathy? (Still surprised LSU didn't find a way to shut that down.) I hear they should be strong in conference this year, but again, when you need to catch all the breaks to go 6-6 it's hard get too excited.
