Oh please. That shelter only "saved" the pooch through begging via GFM. If left to pay the 7K themselves, that's a dead as a doornail dog. Blaming the girl isn't the way, IMO.

The shelter put the time and effort to “beg”, which was way more than the lady did.

Not at my vets office. They let me stay with my pup.

That being said, I would imagine that some people don’t handle stuff like that very well.

As such, that policy would make sense in those instances. Since they can’t know when those instances may occur, they would probably just put in a blanket policy.

I’m glad I got to stay with my dog. I had him for 13 years.

Best dog I ever had…

She says she is willing to pay $7k for the vet bills to get the dog back. That's a no-brainer for the rescue unless they suspect something seriously wrong.

This really happened to me a few days ago: I had the best dog ever, that was a little mutt who lived to be 14 years old. He was a Jack Russell/ Shitsu mix named Gus. Super smart and went with me everywhere. I thought he had to be 1 of a kind. He died 4 years ago.
The other day I'm going to the store and go by one of the neighbor's place out the road and there standing in their yard is his ghost.
I mean absolutely identical in every way. I couldn't believe it.
I stopped and tried to get him to come to me, but he just barked and he sounded exactly like my little dog.
A man comes out of the house and I explain to him the situation and ask where the little dog came from. He said his MIL gave him to his son.
He was born a couple hundred miles from where my little dog came from.
It's unbelievable how much they look exactly alike, especially for a mixed mutt.

Is that shelter not allowing owners to stay with pets being put down so they can they say they put them down but dont, collect the money for euthanasia then sell the same animal for additional money?

That sounds far fetched.

take her desperately ill puppy to a Maryland shelter to be euthanized

Who tf drops their dog off at a shelter to be euthanized? Is this an actual thing?

I've unfortunately (like most here) have had to put multiple dogs down and I could never imagine doing that. Take the poor thing to it's Vet like a normal person and let it die with some dignity for Christ sakes.

I had to put mine down May 3. They came to the house. There was no fear, anxiety. He went quietly at his domain after eating steak all week.

They aren’t cheap for most services relative to others. I was billed $175 for that. I considered that a deal for my best friend’s final moments.

Frick cancer. He was only 5. But the best damn dog I ever had.

If someone reading this didn’t know, some places offer coming to your house for euthanasia. Recommended.

Do they take your pet afterwards?
Or do you bury in the backyard?

It makes sense if you consider it seems like this was the county shelter where they're probably seeing hundreds of dogs a week, and have to put a lot down and probably aren't able to abide by any particular schedule

That and they probably see a high number of healthy animals dropped off to be euthanized by people who no longer want them.

So it may be standard procedure in instances where there isn’t anything visibly wrong for the vet on site to do an evaluation.

We are dealing with an attention hound here. I'm thinking roids or peptides.

She was told that it would cost $12k to do surgery that was likely not going to work. She thought she was doing the right thing by putting it down.

I’m definitely not a pet person (nothing against them, just don’t want any myself), but I would pay that in a heart beat if I was even half as attached as most pet owners claim to be.

The only weird thing about the story is the vet initially diagnosed it with a liver problem, treated for it, and it only got worse. Then they concluded (with a second opinion) it must be neuro. Thus the euthenasia decision. What I want to know is what did the animal shelter find out and diagnose and treat (for $7k) that these other two vets didn't catch? What was the actual problem and actual cure?

given the age and the signs the animal was showing i am fairly confident it had what is known as a portosystemic shunt. It is not a very complicated surgical fix, so im not sure where the 7k figure came from but i dont do private practice work and havent in 2 decades so my pricing is a bit off. still, seems high.
