Exhausted and short on options after consulting two veterinary clinics, Kristie Pereira made the gut-wrenching decision last year to take her desperately ill puppy to a Maryland shelter to be euthanized.

So she was stunned last week to find the dog up for adoption at the same pet rescue organization where she had gotten it.

“I have a lot of questions, but first and foremost, I want him back with me,” Pereira told The Associated Press on Friday.

Pereira, who now lives in San Antonio, said she was working from home in Maryland when she paid $450 in late 2022 to adopt a 2-month-old hound mix from a local group, Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation.

She named the puppy Beau, and the two quickly became inseparable. Beau snuggled next to her as she worked, slept in her bed and even tagged along with her when Pereira would leave the house. But within weeks, it became clear something was wrong with the puppy, Pereira said.

The answer is here:
quote:

The rescue confirmed that Friday in a written statement, giving an extensive timeline showing that its veterinarians found no neurological issues with the dog. After tests diagnosing a liver problem and a $7,000 surgery — paid for through a GoFundMe campaign — the dog was declared healthy.

She took them to a vet who couldn't figure it out and didn't care enough to find proper treatment for the dog. She didn't have enough common sense to get a second opnion.

Someone at the shelter she dropped the dog off to be killed at put a little more work in and found a treatment, then crowdfunded payment for it. Dog is healthy and happily up for adoption now, hopefully to go home with someone less clueless than the original owner.

Also, frick this bitch. She decided it was in the dog's best interest to get put down after "bonding with it" but paid $15 to drop it off with a stranger to live in a cage until it dies. Have some fricking respect and take it to a real vet and be by its side til the end.

Of course if she had done it the proper way the dog wouldn't be alive today, but I have no sympathy or respect for her as a dog owner.

It makes sense if you consider it seems like this was the county shelter where they're probably seeing hundreds of dogs a week, and have to put a lot down and probably aren't able to abide by any particular schedule nor do they have time for purportedly grieving families who gave their dog away to the county.

The only weird thing about the story is the vet initially diagnosed it with a liver problem, treated for it, and it only got worse. Then they concluded (with a second opinion) it must be neuro. Thus the euthenasia decision. What I want to know is what did the animal shelter find out and diagnose and treat (for $7k) that these other two vets didn't catch? What was the actual problem and actual cure?

This is where I would’ve been out. I will be with the dog in his/her final moments, not left alone with some strangers.

I don’t know why she cares. She left the dog to be euthanized and they apparently helped or fixed the dog and adopted him out. Leave it be.
