As someone who somewhat regularly plays golf with people I have never met, I can very much relate to this feeling. It always blows my mind when later I'm asked by my wife or whoever what that person does for a living. More times than not I have no idea. I have no issue playing 18 holes and not talking about what a person does for a living. Granted most of the time it comes up but it is not something I go out of my way to ask.

Determine the good fit based off attraction.

If your attraction depends on someone's profession, maybe go see someone
Someone's job and achievements are far more informative than their looks. One is superficial, while the other tells you much, much more. We all know 95% of initial attraction is looks. That's not very helpful. Their job, career goals say more about them than looks they were born with.

I think it's not a great idea to lie, but I couldn't disagree more about the insight bit.

IMO, it says something about the person. Just like the neighborhood they live in, or where they grew up. It isn’t the entire story by any stretch, but it’s at least relevant to some extent.

I think you're reading too much into it.

It's not an interrogation. It's a simple question.

People asking about what you do for a living aren't deconstructing you as a person. They're just interested in what you do for work.

Lighten up.

I tell people I work on the line at a duct tape factory. In 6 months, I might get the day shift and another 6 months gets me qualified for weekends off.

I never ask what they do in return. Instead, I ask where their family’s from.

Yeah, typically that question gets asked of me well before I think of asking somebody else.

If I meet somebody new that I find is interesting enough for a continued conversation, I feel a much better question is where are you from?

I only ask that question of somebody that I actually relate to more than just a drink at a bar or a casual interaction at a party.

Somebody on my level.

I'm guessing I would probably not ask you any questions.

Some of you people are so flipping weird. It’s just conversation intended to bring up more conversation or a talking point.

Example….

So, what kind of work do you do?

I’m an operator at DuPont.

Oh, small world. I sell widgets to DuPont.

Now we have something to talk about and will probably find a common interest or maybe people we both know. Who knows? It’s why people converse.

Why does everything have to be so freaking strange and awkward with some of you? It’s no great wonder so many of you struggle so mightily in conversational skills.

You must have a high dollar job. I'm unemployed or in other words, retired.

I don’t like interacting (outside of work) with people who are defined almost solely by their profession. People who ask this right after meeting are almost assuredly one of those people. They are also likely trying to determine if they can sell you something or use you in some way.

Cause those people are insecure in their own lives and need to measure theirs to yours

Okay enough bickering about the title.

If you agree with the OP, what do you suggest a random stranger ask in lieu of "what u do for money"

Unless they're retired or unemployed, this is an alternative of "what's your job"

Don’t sell yourself so short. The sky’s the limit if you apply yourself and study hard. You can do it!
