Timely thread. I just opened a gallon from the dollar store and unfortunately has that "off" taste. Not spoiled but just "off". I generally have decent luck with DG store brand milk but I've noticed when the weather gets hot, poor tasting milk becomes more common. My usual milk is Prairie Farms and I'm not sure I've ever gotten a bad gallon.

Great Value is bad more often than its good. Dont have Oak Farm here.

Blows my mind when I ask people about their milk situation and they don't understand what I'm talking about. I guess they can't tell when it tastes like crap.

I'm going to throw this gallon out from DG and won't buy from there again until after October.

Mind you, I am lactose intolerant. I really put myself through it for this data.

So you had no effects or less than others with oak farms?

Any difference in the effect on your LI between whole and 2%?

Weigel’s milk is hard to beat. Most of you have never seen it.

Try it if you get the chance.

dunno, but the one from Costco, it seems to last the longest... some milk goes bad before the use by date, but every single time the Costco milk goes about a week past the use by date...

The only milk I enjoy as a beverage is Meyenberg goats milk. It is delicious.

I was in a Houston Walmart last weekend, and they were selling GV brand milk for $2.22/gal. That's compared to $4.11 in Baton Rouge. Like almost half our local price. Any idea why there's so much of a price disparity?

Louisiana has a minimum dairy markup to help dairy farmers.

I think they tried to repeal it, but the legislature was probably brought a few cases of milk during that session and it failed.

quote:

Dairy Stabilization Law: This law, enacted in 1974, aims to stabilize the dairy market by preventing retailers from selling milk below cost, which could potentially harm the dairy industry and lead to unfair competition.

Minimum Markup: The law mandates a minimum markup of 6% on the cost of milk (including freight charges).

Dairy Stabilization Board: This board is responsible for overseeing and enforcing the regulations related to milk pricing in Louisiana.

The true chocolate milk GOAT!

Haven't tried that before, but Fairlife has the best I've tasted. My dad worked for Brown's Velvet when we were kids and we went through multiple gallons of choco and whole milk a week

Fairlife whole milk is also good for me now with a bit of LI

Go with Ultra pasteurized. Keeps indefinitely at room temperature unopened and after it's opened lasts a month in your refrigerator.

Doesn’t it worry you that this process may kill some of the helpful vitamins/nutrients?

If you live in New Orleans the Sunday city park farmers market has a number of decent options. The T&R Dairy Farm is my favorite for milk and they also sell the only yogurt worth buy it in the city.

I may have to check this out. I used to be a big fan of smith creamery milk until it burned down (i think).

Milk and eggs is a main reason I go to the farmers market.

Second this. We are lucky that every Thursday there is a farmer’s market walking distance from our house. We refuse to buy eggs from any other place. For milk we can get regional sourced from our local grocery store.

Braums

They own and control their food chain from top to bottom on all food products. Is why they don't open stores outside a certain 250 Mike radius of their Oklahoma HQ

I haven't tried the Fairlife chocolate milk, but I'll give it a try. Would be shocked if it's better than the Promised Land though.
