my wife is a public school teacher in thibodaux too. These numbers are correct but it all depends on how long you been a teacher. Its a set amount depending on years taught. My wife is in the 40-45 range

Don't get too hung up on the 3 month off thing. Ever live with a teacher? My mother was one for 25 years. They come home and grade papers and make lesson plans after they come home. Sometimes up until late at night. No overtime pay. I'd rather work a regular job year round than do what they do for what they do and get 3 months off. That's not to mention putting up with student's parents and all their crap.

I taught for 6 years. Definitely don't miss it. Whole lot of crap to put up with that many people don't think about.

My daughter will have her teaching masters next May. Depending on the county she gets on with in northern Virginia she'll start between $53-$57k.

No, its the "we (and I say this as a former teacher) work just as hard and as long as anyone else" comment.
Teachers definitely earn their pay. Sure, there are some who just skate by. The good teachers, however, work much longer than "school hours".

BS, My niece went to college and a degree for accounting. She got a job with the school board and cuts the teachers checks. When she seen what they were making she reenrolled in college to take a few more classes to become a teacher. They make more than her and she started in the low 40s.

In the BR area public school teachers earn between 45-65k depending on years experience and degree. Average total benefits (retirement, insurance, sick leave) equals 12k. Coaches can get an extra 1-15k depending on sport.
SJA and Episcopal pay about the same as public. Other private schools pay less. A small christian school might only pay 25k but they usually dont require certification or even a degree.

The school day here is only 6.5 hours here. I counted the school days on the district calendar and there are around 185 school days a year. The average worker in other occupations puts in about 240 days a year (estimate)

Rich suburbs will pay extra to get the best teachers for their kids. It's a relatively small number of jobs though.
On the other hand the $69,000 average pay is well above what my wife made as a professor. It's not surprising that Illinois is broke.

Teachers get paid great up here, the public school system is fantastic (minus the inner city) and this is one of the many reasons.

Louisville it's on the high end too, principals start at $110K and that's for public "ELEMENTARY" schools.

I'm friends with several teachers, and it's certainly not as cushy of a job as you think.
Just because school isn't in doesn't mean the teachers aren't working. Grading papers, writing lesson plans, assorted other school duties..

Got a nephew that is on his first year teaching in New Orleans. Has a masters. Told me starting pay was 45K.

I make roughly 50k per. I was at school both days this past weekend (To hell with you UF) grading papers etc. I also coach as well. I haven't gotten a raise in 8 years. Such is life. FWIW, I love my job, I'm paid well enough to enjoy some of what life has to offer, and yes- I do get plenty of days off. In short, there are positives and negatives. Underpaid...nope (no matter what numerous women in the field may say), overpaid...I don't think so. My pay breaks down to about 17 bucks an hour with coaching included, around 25 without. With a degree, 20 plus years experience, named Teacher of the Year, and Coach of the year (3x), I feel like I have earned my check. To those that have an agenda against the profession, have at it. Peace peeps.
