That is Chicago - Louisiana is about half of that on the high and low end.

Louisiana is closer to 30-35K unless you're a professor

Eta: I'm wrong. Apologies to OT teachers

Teachers make about 40 around here. The best you'll really get starting out is around 45

It's not that low. My wife teaches public school in LA and makes 45-50. Our parish pays less than some of the surrounding parishes.

That is entirely location dependent.

Why can't the low paid teachers just not be poor?

I went to one of those schools where teachers routinely earn six figures. I think they have hundreds, if not thousands of applicants for each job. They start around 50, the six figures are 20+ year teachers. Taxes are insane in these districts too.

That's the teacher's unions working for you.
State of Illinois governments can't be on solid ground, yet pays it's teachers this.
Don't forget about those cush pensions they get when they can retire in the old age as 49.

I believe BR is around $43K/yr. Not bad for no weekends, no holidays, a week off for Thanksgiving/Christmas/Easter, and nearly 3 months off for summer break.
