Im in year 15 at a rural school just east of columbus and currently at 61k without a masters. Started out at 28k though..i lived better as a poor college student than i did my first 5 years of teaching. I think my district tops out at 78k with a masters..which is a little below avg for our county.
If you can get to year 10 or so its a good gig considering all the time you have off. 7:15 to 2:30 182 days a year. I have enough free time to own a residential window cleaning business that cleans 400 plus homes a year (all my employees are teachers) and i flip a house every winter when its too cold to wash.
Don't feel sorry for teachers that complain about how little they make..they have plenty of time off to go make more money.

My wife spends a few hours/night grading papers, doing lesson plans, projects, researching innovative lessons she can incorporate into her class, etc.
She has a lot of days off, yes, but I would venture to say she works closer to 11 hours/day. She also sprends a good chunk of her summer prepping her classroom for the following year, including coming out of pocket for a lot of expenses.
There are some trade offs in that she gets to be off with the kids and the long breaks, but don't have the notion that it's a part time gig. Good teachers work their asses off.

My wife is year 3 in MS. 34k/year. She gets a raise though after getting her masters and reaching year 4 to take it up 42 I believe. Needless to say she doesn't do it for the money.

Chicago is a pretty expensive area to live in, even out in the 'burbs that's not a lot of money, at all

there is a whole school, full of teachers making 90K+, getting paid not to teach.
they are so bad, but the schools system in NY cannot fire them, because of tenure and unions, that they pay them to sit in a room and not teach.
One guy had sex with a student, and since no one pressed charges, he wasnt fired, just sent to the non teaching school to sit with other teachers, who they cant fire.

Chicago is not that expensive compared to other large cities. Chicago is probably the cheaper of the large cities to live in.
