re: Hypothetical if a 7.8 earthquake hit California like it did Turkey how bad

Was in a 7.1 several years back and I was amazed at the lack of damage. Building codes with enforcement makes all the difference. Both the earthquake I was in and the one in Turkey were shallow meaning it was a more violent “shaking”. I saw a video of a new building in Turkey collapsing which surprised me.

A 7.8 would be a good start. But if we could get an 8.5 to hit Los Angeles I would be most pleased.
A major quake would have severe repercussions on the US economy.

Underground nuclear weapon test
This video demonstrates just how powerful earthquakes are AND how powerful nuclear weapons are. And this was just a 6.8 magnitude, so nature is able to produce earthquakes easily over 1,000x greater power than a 5Mt nuclear weapon. Scary stuff

I was thinking somewhere along the San Andreas. Let’s say between San Fran and LA

I'm more curious about when the next big earthquake (8-9+) will hit the PNW.
If a big one hits the cascadia subduction zone you can kiss Portland goodbye.

I mean it is going to happen. I wonder when. Do they have any clue?

I’ve always wondered how effective they would be at creating tsunamis and what the environmental impact is of one being set off underwater.

It would be great if a 17.8 hit directly on Hollywood Blvd
You would feel it in Texas. You might even feel it in Paris. It’s believed that even the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs would have clocked in at 11 or 12.

They've commissioned some studies and done some pretty extensive what ifs, kinda like Nola has for the big hurricane.
This article:

Paints a pretty grisly what if scenario of a 9.0 hitting the fault. It includes five "first person" accounts of what happens after the initial five minutes of carnage. It's like zombie apocalypse type stuff but IRL. Or, as another poster said, it's basically a dry Katrina but much much worse for that region of the country. If you have time it's a pretty fun read if you are into that sort of thing.
I encourage anyone to read it if they really want an idea of what would happen in that scenario.

Why? What did LA do to you?

n October 17, 1989, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay Area, killing 67 people and causing more than $5 billion in damages.
It would take YEARS to restore it from a 7.8.

There was a 7.9 in AK in 2002, moved water in S. La. Ripped the ground for over 200 miles along the fault.
I was over 100 miles away in Wasilla at a restaurant, and you couldn't stand up.

Having lived through the 94 Northridge earthquake, I can't imagine what a 7.8 would feel like.
LA is built outwards, not upwards. We don't have many bridges or tunnels. As someone earlier mentioned, lots of single family dwellings that would make it through ok. I'd venture to guess SF would be more fricked by a 7.8 than los Angeles.

I was there in Torrance Ca. and was amazed at the lack of damage from what it felt like when that big jolt hit that measured 6.7. I`m sure you remember that scary sht. I relive it every time I hear the word earthquake.

Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.
