It seems like it must only be a matter of time until there is a large one out there. Would we see the same amount of deaths? Seems like buildings would be better here. I can only imagine the damage and chaos. When it happens it will be the disaster of the century so far.

Any way we can make it happen faster?

Just kidding, California. (Sort of)

The 1906 earthquake that completely destroyed SF was estimated at 7.8.

Almost all of the older construction in the Bay Area dates from post 1906

Northridge had a 6.7 hit. caused $40B in damages

the one that hit turkey is 1000x's stronger

I imagine most cites would not be able to survive that level of destruction

Current building codes in California have buildings rated to survivable up to a 7.0 earthquake. Survivable meaning that it stands up long enough for occupants to escape. Their codes are designed to save people but not the buildings. Id imagine in a 7.8 scenario you would have lots of injured and dead along with completely non-repairable infrastructure on a widespread scale.

Yep. I was there just after and it was pretty bad with a lot of infrastructure damage.

It would be great if a 17.8 hit directly on Hollywood Blvd

So, you're asking us hypothetically if we care?

California building codes >>>>> Turkey/Syria building codes

It would be a massive catastrophe, but California would fare much better due to better infrastructure and buildings.

Bruh, Richter scale is based on log 10. "1000x's stronger" than a 6.7 would be stronger than 9.7.

The 7.8 in Turkey was about 12.6 times stronger than Northridge at 6.7.

The Bay Area probably is a little better infrastructure wise since they rebuilt areas that were hit from the World Series quake and upgraded existing structures at the time

Who knows in LA - they haven't had a monster quake that could tax infrastructure the way Bay Area did
I'm sure LA did a lot of upgrades to existing structures but who knows until LA actually experiences the big one
LA has a lot more homes on the water that could easily fall off into the ocean with a massive quake
