Okay, yeah, I know. But it likely won't be a category five at landfall and NHC predicts a very small wind field. I understand the concern about storm surge going into Tampa and those folks that are in low lying areas should GTFO and away from the coast but I'm suggesting the hype is similar to Rita after everyone saw Katrina.
And Rita was chopped liver? Not sure what you are getting at. No hype about it, this is very serious.

Is this thing moving further south or north of Tampa?

The cone moved slightly South from what I understand putting Tampa on the “left” side of the centerline.

For all the people in this thread that have loved ones staying in areas with significant storm surge risk, please get them to at least have a life jacket for everyone in the house and an axe available if they are caught in the attic.

People in Fort Myers puckered up a little tighter after this last NHC update.

Do people outside of SWLA not think that Rita caused devastation or something?

no, I think what he is saying is that when one catastrophic event happens, it does help get the point across for the next one if it follows almost immediately afterwards.

for Katrina, there had been a long enough gap prior to her that a lot of people didn't take it as seriously as they should have.
for Rita, people got the message and got it quick because they saw what Katrina had just done.

so sorta similar thing here.
we just saw a storm totally frick people up.
that being fresh in their minds, they are more apt to actually listen to the warnings for this one.

Milton has a legitimate chance to take on Wilma’s pressure record, especially with that late evening maximum thing that storms do when the sun goes down. I never remember the name.

Diurnal maximum or diurnal pulses. Mature hurricanes can really maximize the energy from the diurnal cycle, and it usually happens at night. If an EWRC doesn't begin like it did yesterday evening, we will probably see that tonight. Crazy to think it has a higher ceiling.

At least according to Google maps right now it looks like traffic is flowing pretty well out of Tampa and people from the Fort Myers south to Naples are evacuating to Fort Lauderdale/Miami where there is some traffic backup on I-75 and Hwy 41.

I was looking earlier and it seemed like tratfic was pretty good for the most part. I don't know if that is a good sign or a bar sign.

The morning after a hurricane is always beautiful.
As long as you are just looking at the sky it is beautiful. When you take your stare to the ground you see hell on earth. The contrast is striking.
