What is the forecast for Irma Saturday morning? I am on a cruise ship that is scheduled to return to port at 6-7 am Sat to Miami. My first cruise and I know thr OT's opinion! Was supposed to go to Peru to Rico, St Martin, Turks and some other island but they rerouted us to the West. The internet sux on these boats and hard to get news. Thanks baws

The Soggy Dollar webcam that was posted a couple of pages back was not live. It was tape on YouTube from this morning before the storm hit.

Yeah. It was posted lasted night tha the island had been evacuated. Don't know if they can force anyone to leave though.

The Twitter person was correct as it sounds like the entire place is completely demolished. All infrastructure is destroyed. 1600 people lived on Barbuda. So far one confirmed fatality on the Island.

Would imagine they will re route you back into a different port, have never been on a cruise though.

Dropsonde @ 911.3mb. She seems to be bombing out. Satellite images look incredible.

I still have a gut feeling this is going to slide to the west a little more. There was movement to the west, then everything slide out to the Atlantic, now it's sliding back to the west.
Wouldn't be surprised, at all, if the eye came in centered just to the southeast of Marco Island in between there and Key West. That means that Irma would only have to travel for about two and half to three more hours due west before making that turn straight north. All that would take is the ridge pushing down from the northwest to stall a little. We're still four days away from the turn, so it could still be a crapshoot on the landing site.

The city proper was mostly spared. Ground zero at Homestead, about 20 miles south, not so much.

What's interesting is all the models keep predicting her dropping to a 4 by the time she hits Miami, but the pressures from the models are all in the 5 range.
Also they all seem notoriously bad at predicting strength. I remember the night before Irma turned into a Cat 5 there wasn't a single "forecast" with her turning into a 5. Now it's been 2 days of her being a 5.

Only half of the residents on Anegada chose to leave. About 120 people stayed behind on an island with a maximum elevation of 28 feet.

Isn't that the island that took a direct hit? There are going to be some dramatic images coming out of there soon.
The anemometer failed after 155 mph wind gusts, and the eye hadn't completely traversed the island.

i can't imagine there's that much more than 1000 structures on barbuda, really was a bare island looking at google maps.

I don't think the port will be open. Perhaps they'll pause in Key West or take you to Tampa.

Andrew was a very small hurricane and devastated south of Miami. Miami itself and northward didn't get the brunt of the storm.
quote:
Although effects from Andrew were catastrophic, the extent of damage was limited mainly from Kendall south to Key Largo due to the small wind field of the storm.
The red dot is Kendall - south of Miami.
