So FEMA reimburses if you were to evacuate and pay for travel? I didn't know that, or never really thought about it.

Don't take that to the bank. It is certainly not a policy but in severe circumstances it was done in some areas. (Katrina) I wouldn't build my plan around it.

have a friend who lives in BR with a house in St. John he told me yesterday that he's got cinderblock walls and insurance, and his wife has been wanting to redecorate.

Yeah I think it's cinder block. He's in a relatively poor part of town and I think most of the houses in the area are like that.

I'm afraid it will continue west as well... landfall between Biloxi and Gulf Shores

ETA - I have absolutely no qualifications whatsoever, just a gut feeling.. whatever they are expecting to suck this thing north won't be strong enough to steer it like they think it will, so it will continue west

JMO though

This is not the place for your "humble opinion". Let's stick to the computers and models that actually know what they are talking about. The biggest, baddest hurricane is still going to be steered by the factors around it. Its been said a bunch in this thread already. The cane isnt driving, the ridges and troughs around it are.

As a comparison: 185 MPH is right snack in the middle of the range for an F3 tornado. That would mean the sustained wind of the Hurricane would be around same speed of the top 5% or so of the strongest tornadoes.

A hurricane with those types of winds is just unfathomable to me.

Battered by that for several hours too. I wonder if any man-made structure on one of the islands can survive that.

That's so terrible. How many people live there?

Maybe Irma will wobble north and spare them the eyewall.

Not trying to be a dick, but I know someone who rode out Katrina in plaquemines parish... they stayed down in Venice I think and according to them, if they survived Katrina, then they will be alright
Of course people will survive when the most severe situations, but I don't what "they will be fine means" in general.

Besides, if it makes landfall in its current state (a lot will change), the winds would be 60 MPH more than they were when Katrina hit. It's essentially 1.5 times the wind speed.

And those are the hags only. You have to go get your own sand.

Is that so hard

It's looking like they will get the south side of the storm. Hopefully they don't get it too bad. Just think about Jeff and those cinderblock walls held up just fine that he parked between during harvey

Oh I understand completely. I wasn't agreeing with them, that's just the mindset some people have down here

Irma has suststained winds 60 MPH faster than anything Venice experienced in Katrina.

The winds on Irma are much strong if I am not mistaken. This is one bad storm!

Just about most of the structures being built now are poured concrete specifically made to combat hurricanes.

Hoping they stand up to the winds.

You don't think a-hole owners won't force their gas stations, fast food restaurants, hardware stores, and of course grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. to remain open as long as possible?

I'm one of the aforementioned "a-hole owners" of a hardware store. There will be people banging on the doors twenty minutes before the eye wall crosses. My employees and family won't be there, but I'll have to ride it out to get opened as soon afterward as possible. It's not because I'm a greedy a-hole, it's because people in the community really do depend on being able to get what they need to start digging out and cleaning up.

If this were not bad enough, Jose is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by tomorrow. Hopefully Irma will have sapped all of his fuel.
