Some parts of Louisiana were without power for months when Katrina hit. Granted, that was probably more isolated low population areas but I was in a higher population one and it took exactly 1 month to get our power back on. I don't know how it's networked up there but if it took that path I'd prepare for something similar considering this beast.

Yea F that. One thing to ride out a 2 or even a 3 if you're a bit inland. Quite another to stare down one of the strongest storms on record when you're on the coast.

We will know a lot more when the new models come out in a few hours. I've been thinking it'll continue westward for longer than predicted. I want to be wrong, gulf doesn't need more of this shite.
I'm afraid it will continue west as well... landfall between Biloxi and Gulf Shores
ETA - I have absolutely no qualifications whatsoever, just a gut feeling.. whatever they are expecting to suck this thing north won't be strong enough to steer it like they think it will, so it will continue west
JMO though

Based on the current recon data, it looks like winds of 85+ mph extend at least 70 miles north of the center of Irma.

Some can't get away from their jobs. First, they need the money, second, as you say, can't afford to go stay at a motel somewhere.
At $100/ night plus meals, you could spend $1000 or more for an extended leave. Sure, it could mean life or death, but some will argue that leaving when it isn't imminent,is a waste of what little cash they may have.
Invest in camping gear and MRE food. Drive to a safe distance and set up in a rest area or public park. If your boss considers themselves more important, tell them to GFY

I was thinking the same ... delivery people maybe who keep stores supplied wouldn't be able to evacuate until it's too late possibly. Business owners keeping stores open??? Idk.

I have a friend who lives on St Thomas and she couldn't get on an airplane in time. Rightfully, she is scared shitless.

My question too. Being in Hilton Head it seems this thing is coming our way, just a matter of how long it's over land first. If it makes landfall around Miami and starts tracking up the coast, will it slow down significantly? I evacuated last Oct for Matthew, really don't want to go again. Wish this thing would turn around and leave everyone alone
If I were in HH I would be planning my evac. and just hope I don't have to do it. I'd be thinking Thurs/Fri.

You don't think a-hole owners won't force their gas stations, fast food restaurants, hardware stores, and of course grocery stores, pharmacies, etc. to remain open as long as possible?
Then you have mail service, other service jobs that serve nation wide, radio and TV stations
