Just about most of the structures being built now are poured concrete specifically made to combat hurricanes.
Hoping they stand up to the winds.

It is heart breaking watching these little islands with Cat 5 destruction coming. I saw a pic on Levi's video and Irma the big puta's eye... was bigger than the entire island.

I understand that. But I have a loved one in Irmas direct path and all that separates them is that poured concrete building. I'm gonna keep hoping it's enough.

Just imagine living on some island like that onehundred years ago
You wake up one day "huh looks like a thuderstorm today"
and then your house fricking blows away with no warning

7-11 feet of surge is expected for the islands first to be hit. I guess the water can go around them easier than a storm hitting a very large landmass. I figured it would be much higher than that, though.

The white capping on the beach is almost constant now on the Barbados cam.

Cars in line half a block to get into gas station parking lots at 1040 PM in northern PBC. Crazy shite

I imagine those ancient cultures were probably pretty decent at predicting hurricanes. During the tsunami that hit Indonesia, there were isolated tribes that scientists expected to be wiped out but they used indicators of a tsunami that had been passed down for centuries and sought high ground. They were relatively unscathed.

I understand completely.. I wouldn't stay for anything more than a Cat 2.. I'm sure my opinion would change a little if i didn't have family involved, but not much. I'm taking the irreplaceable stuff I own and leaving town
a few people rode out Katrina in in Port Sulphur, Buras, etc on house boats..

CAT 5 Irma > CAT 3 Katrina.

quote:Well I do think concrete has the best chance to standing up to the winds alone. Obviously water and other things are concerning as well depending on one's location.

Transmission lines in that area of Florida should be designed for 150mph imagine sustained 170+ winds just snapping those massive steel poles

Let's stick to the computers and models that actually know what they are talking about.
Since they've been right on the money so far with Irma, right?

Wouldn't a 185 mph wind speed get a 747 off the ground? The devastation that could do to homes or buildings is unfathomable.

These first few are on the weaker side of the storm, right? At least as far as storm surge. Or does that not matter as much for smaller islands.

Katrina was a Cat 5 at one time. So was Matthew last year that some people seem to write off as nothing more than an afternoon thunderstorm once it actually got close to FL.
