My buddy in Jacksonville is still on a wait and see approach. He's pretty much fricked right??

The possible landfall locations leave the question of just how bad it will be up in the air, but he best have a gameplan if Jacksonville looks to catch the brunt of the system. The position of the turn matters for how bad he'll get it, and that's still difficult to pinpoint.

And unknownknight, the CMC hasn't performed well on tropical systems and at least the run I saw last night moved Irma way too fast. I wouldn't put much stock in it until other models start lining up with it.

Cuba didn't weaken Ivan. The cooler water in the Gulf of Mexico did that.

also it seems like the CMC is initializing the storm at a much higher pressure than where it currently sits so thats a problem off the bat

I never said it did. That was the point of my post. Missing/Hitting Cuba made a huge difference between the two storms.

180mph is insane. Isn't it only supposed to strengthen as the pressure drops to record levels?

Are we looking at a potential 200+mph storm in the making?

If they get into the eye before it starts hitting the barrier islands. I bet you might find truth to that question.

the potential is there butt he good thing with these storms is its very hard for them to maintain their intensity. usually theyll undergo different cycles which will weaken them (eyewall replacement, etc.) even if just momentarily. what it comes on sure as will depend alot on timing.

It still did $75billion in damage and was the largest Atlantic hurricane ever, but yeah

Yep. Folks in the south like to give them a lot of crap for that storm, but it was certainly nothing to sneeze at. Maybe not the storm that the media hyped it up to be, but it was a pretty serious storm.

Georges reatrengthened to a Cat 2 almost immediately after getting into the Gulf, but to your point it was a Cat 4 in the same area Irma is now.

Here's to hoping Irma doesn't follow this track though

haha I remember riding out Georges on the Wank. That sum bitch turned just enough east to avoid being Pre-Katrina for NOLA.

Dumbass here, I always have heard that the GOM has warmer waters, which strengthens a hurricane.

This is not the case?

Little known fact: forensic examination of all of the levee issues during Katrina showed that New Orleans indeed almost had a major levee breach during Georges. Crazy to think that came very close to being Katrina before Katrina.

True.

Apparently it had cooler waters that particular year.
