I have no doubt the news media would if this thing maintains its energy as it gets closer to Florida. But there is no such thing as a Category 6.

"Superstorm" Sandy was a Cat 1 when making landfall. I can't even imagine what made-for-tv SciFi channel movie term the media would lay on this storm.

Aren't smaller storms sometimes more destructive? Wasn't that the deal with Andrew?

GFS 12z Tues Sept 5 up and loading. I wonder if it still jogs east when the Euro jogged west?

Said the mountains in Cuba would take it down a good bit if it hit directly, but if no direct hit, not much to take it down

If it skirts but a big chunk of the intense inner circulation hits the mountains it will affect the strength. We all see how organized it is right now. With little friction to impact the circulation, all the energy it picks up goes into maintaining the organization and increasing the winds. Have mountains force the circulation to slow down and more energy has to be used to maintain the circulation. Get it over land where it can't tap the fuel its using to do all this and the impacts are even more pronounced.

Oh, yes. Camille was a very small hurricane yet might be the most powerful storm the Atlantic Basin has ever seen (at landfall).

We're talking 190 MPH sustained winds as it came ashore in Mississippi. They might have even topped 200 MPH but the instruments measuring the storm's windspeed were blown away.

the NHC track makes it look like the only model that they are using is the Euro.

stupid of them IMO

What track do you feel they're missing?

Every major global model falls within that cone over the next 5 days.

I was on Reddit arguing with some yankee that thought sandy was stronger than Harvey because of this narrative.

NOAA officially says Sandy was only a tropical storm at landfall. LINK

That's why they put the label of "Superstorm" Sandy on it to make it sound like it was stronger than a tropical storm.

the only thing Sandy had on any of our normal hurricanes was that it merged with a cold front and immediately became a Nor'Easter

I am currently on FB trying to convince people I know on the Florida coast to get the hell out of dodge right now before the other 10 million people take off.

They don't seem to want to listen
