That storm is freaking beautiful. I hate how nature can be so deadly yet so pretty.

Recon data suggesting CAT5

That's an understatement. Estimated surface winds were 172 mph on that last pass. Damn.

Hurricane Hunters just found surface winds in Irma of 170mph. This thing will very, very likely be a Cat 5 today.

From what I've seen on the models and cones and such, this storm is still 5-6 days from making that northern turn. They seem to be confident this will happen but I've always read where you can't count on anything that far out because conditions are constantly changing.

So what's the deal?

Eta: I keep trying to reassure friends and family that there is .5% chance it even gives us a breeze here in La but they don't realize where my info comes from

I completely agree. You can only handle so much of this in a lifetime. It's especially painful having to rebuild while dealing with insurance companies and crooked contractors. That's a long time to carry that much stress. frick it.

I'm over near St Petersburg in Madeira Beach.
-Hurricane shutters install starts tomorrow.
-Trailer is loaded with essential items and supplies
-Checklists being finalized today for possible long outages of water and power.

Lived in Ft Myers when Charley hit in 2004. Do not plan on suffering the way I did in my 20's. I've got 3 children and a wife to look after now.

00Z Euro EPS shifted west again and now has a cluster into the Panhandle (cluster analysis not shown) but still shows a lot of spread.

How are they measuring that? It seems they overestimated Harvey's winds. Is there a buoy or something at the surface that measured 175 for 60 seconds?
