wonder how much debris is essentially blown into the oceans from the islands during such a storm.

Eyewalls open on the west side. Once Dorian gets moving, I'd expect that to fill in with the warm water that Dorian will be running over. That is good news for Freeport at the moment at least.

holy crap. Looks like a Haitian city.
Sad part about this area is that it is home to an unknown number of illegal immigrants from Haiti and Jamaica so the Government will never know how many have actually died here. Saw estimates that the government thought as many as 5k illegals lived there.

I wonder how many people are washed away.

Governor jumped the gun on this one.
Fairly certain no one predicted the storm to slow to the forward motion speed that its been for the last couple of days.

I would be curious to see how much colder the waters around Grand Bahama are, now that a strong hurricane has been parked over it for days.
Will that impact the local weather temporarily until the waters warm back up?

My apologies if I’ve missed something posted, but does anyone know the status of Freeport? Specifically the church that was posted where all of those people were trying to ride out the storm?

If that is the church that I believe it is, it was on cruise ship tour routes. It was overran with "merchants", trying to sell trinkets and souvenirs to the cruise ship passengers.
Sort of reminiscent of the crowd Jesus ran out of the temple.

Weather Channel: Dorian doubles in speed as it approaches Florida Coast!!!

But it was 1 mph 3 hrs ago so a 100% increase. Like turning a tanker.
I imagine the NHC staff were collectively holding their breath with their forecast about the stall and then the forecast turn. I’m impressed.

It was actually predicted to stall all along. Go back 3 or 4 days in this thread and you will see people talking about what would become of the Bahamas if it stalled over them. Even then, Dorian wasn't predicted to be to SC until around Friday.

Crazy that by friday this storm will move more in 5 minutes than it has in 2 days

Got to love the continuous awfulizing by TWC trying for viewers/clicks, while being laughed at by knowledgeable viewers.

Once the stall happened where it did (further east than expected) I bet the NHC knew exactly what it was going to do. How close it would ultimately get to the FL east coast was dependent upon where that stall happened. It happened further east than expected.

This must be a sight for sore eyes for Grand Bahama and all of the Bahamas...Dorian pulling away and pressure rising.
