This is a damn understatement. He was literally in town to make the state legislature do what he wanted by getting rid of his political opponents district. He also didn't let the governor use the governor's office at the capital because that was "his" office (its now the speakers office).

Oscar Allen addressed Huey as "Governor".

Long was only slightly more left than FDR. I don’t think they were opposed on much.

America wasn’t electing a Louisianan in the 1930s. Certainly they weren’t going to upend a sitting NYC liberal with the name of Roosevelt for Huey fricking Long.

Long’s plan was to run as a 3rd party candidate in 1936 and take votes away from FDR, letting the Republican win. Long would then run for President as the Democrat candidate in 1940. I can see how it would have worked. President Long in December 1941 would have made for an interesting timeline.

As for Long, since we're in this cycle of renaming roads and buildings and shite, can we please remove his and Earl's names off stuff too? Damn family still a drag on Louisiana to this day.

Unfortunately he did everlasting damage to the state, sort of like Peron in Argentina. Neither had any ideas other than staying in power and takign lots of money.

There is a clue to figure out exactly what happened with Huey. Go the statue in front of the state capitol and his hand is pointing at it. You have to look hard and keep en open mind but it’s pretty easy to figure out.

I worked at the Capitol in college and a groundskeeper told me about this. It’s a pretty cool when you figure it out.

Wasn't the Messina bodyguard rumored to have been trigger happy and fire the shots accidentally?

I have a picture of my grandfather graduating from Tulane School of Medicine. He is in the picture with Dr. Carl Weiss.

I worked at the Old State Capitol in 1995 when they installed the assassination exhibit and I got to take a picture holding the gun that was allegedly used to kill long. For a Louisiana kid, it was pretty cool.

100% a whack job by FDR.

That's what I believe. As a senator, his message was beginning to resonate with the rest of America during the Great Depression, a time when Americans were searching for answers. FDR was unable to help Americans dig themselves out. Long posed a threat to Roosevelt's presidency, whether directly or indirectly, and I believe FDR understood that.

Fun fact. There are a couple of stucco duplexes on Stanford just before the park. Huey had them built for his bodyguards

Imagine a timeline where Huey survives, defeats FDR, wins the presidency, and oversees WW2.

Huey P Long was a truly dangerous combination of ruthless cunning, charisma, zero moral hangups, and infinite ambition.
