HP Printer Rant

Had to buy a new printer after our 15 year old HP bit the dust. Of course, it immediately needs ink, so I ordered some on Amazon. Unboxed the ink, took off the cap, installed the ink and get an error message: ‘HP chip not detected in ink cartridge. This cartridge is not compatible with this printer and cannot be used’
WTF??? I can’t believe HP can force you to buy their ink with chip technology. So instead of $30-40, I just spent $130 for a new set. It will probably last a year or longer, but it’s the principal and it’s bullshite.

Most can be refilled with a generic ink refill set.

Yep. Have had an HP for about 5 years now. Finally got smart and bought generic ink from Amazon and it worked. I was told to avoid updating the firmware. Like a moron I updated the firmware and it threw the same error after that. So back to $100 HP ink.

Some of the newer chips have a kind of clock function that detects when the cartridge is empty. Once that's tripped, they can't be used again no matter how much ink is actually in them.
I rarely print in color, and bought a Brother monochrome laser. Printing is way cheaper, and you can use third party toner.

I subscribe to their $7.99 ink package, and can print like 500 pgs per month or so.
When ink is low, they automatically ship new.

Can’t honestly remember the last time I had a need to print something out. Have never owned a printer. Maybe in the old days, I’d use the one at work.

Then you run out of ink doing all the calibrations and ink cartridge testing to make sure it works right before you even print what you want

I gave up trying to print at home like 10 years ago. Can never get the drivers right or whatever. Just print at work if I need to.

This. We rarely use a printer, but since its a laser printer it works every time
