It all depends on the scenario. Does she make more money or the same and used her money? Is the family wealthy enough that a new car isn't even on the radar as far as expenses? There's too many variables to just give a blanket answer.

My wife pulled this off in Spring 2013 while pregnant with our first child. I was driving a used Chevy Aveo that had its share of issues. Without discussing it as a couple, she traded that car in for a brand-new Nissan Altima. When she arrived home with the car and I approached her in the driveway to ask what was going on, she smiled and said, "Happy Mothers Day to me!"

I wasn't terribly upset, as the new car buying process is not an experience I enjoy. Still, we joke sometimes that there's no way she would have made such a bold move if she wasn't carrying my child at the time.

Depends on the couple I guess.

IMO, a big purchase like that should be discussed at length with no surprises.

I wouldn't buy a car without consulting my wife either. I expect the same courtesy. Married people should make large financial decisions as a unit.

If a new car is a large financial cost to you, then you probably don't understand why a couple wouldn't talk to each other when that level of money isn't a question.

My wife buys her car, I buy mine. We aren't getting lambos so it doesn't matter.

Lot of weak men here.

I don't see the issue as long as it fell within their budget range.

Out of curiosity, with respect to those thinking this is no big deal, do y'all have young kids?

I don't have any kids. Life isn't very complicated from that aspect. Listening to some of the responses to this makes me glad I don't have any.
But even if I did, I would trust my wife to go buy a car if she wanted one.

do you people have so little trust/faith in your partners? what kind of woman did yall marry?

It's not just a wife thing, any material purchase should at least be discussed. Materiality changes from situation to situation, but to not communicate something like that is insane to me.

It would depend... if her income could handle the note without pulling from anything else, no worries. If the expense strained existing financial obligations, that would be a huge problem.

Fine by me. I have done this a few times to her and she makes plenty of money.
If she did not get a good deal I would not be happy.

If you tally this thread for a sample, looks like it's about 50/50 guys caring if their wife buys a car so I'd go easy on the name calling........

There's too much at play to answer a blanket yes or no.

Does the married/common law couple have good or bad credit?
Is the purchase for a monthly note or straight cash?
Are kids involved (think type of car/transportation of said kids)?

If you've got a marriage set up on an understood judgement of small vs. medium vs. large purchases that directly or indirectly affect your individual or combined credit scores or bank account(s), then you're a 1%'er. Congrats.

But a middle class family member just up & deciding to head to the dealership to buy a car with straight cash or a monthly note (where credit is 1000% ran) = no member of a couple is realistically doing this without consequence.

I would be pretty shocked as we usually give each other a heads up on high dollar purchases. As for car purchases in the past for her, she picks out what she wants and I do the sit down with the sales people. She wants nothing to do with that end of it.
