Meh, if we could afford it, I don't think I'd be too upset. It would actually be pretty refreshing that I didn't have to deal with the hassle of buying a new vehicle. Especially with all the added stress she throws into those situations with all the details I'm pretty indifferent about.

Out of curiosity, with respect to those thinking this is no big deal, do y'all have young kids?

If she already did it, I wouldn’t be mad. But I know I could have saved her money which would be a little aggravating but whatever

We usually let our driver handle these kinds of things.

My wife is a grown up so she’s welcome to buy a new car whenever she feels like it’s time.

7 & 5. But we also didn't have those kids when we were 22 and broke. We waited and got into a nice place and both had established careers going before creating a family.

Like I said, I would be furious if she jeopardized our overall financial health by making a purchase we couldn't afford. Who wouldn't be? But, I didn't marry a dunce who is irresponsible with money.

edit, didn't see young, so no. But we have always worked with this arrangement regardless of the age of our child

She makes more money than I do, so it’s her money to spend. No problem.

My ex wife did this. Took her old car in for minor issue and came home with brand new suv. I wasn't mad about it. I drove it more than her for my commute.
Then we divorced two years later and she stopped paying the car note and I found out she forged my name as primary borrower on the car.

A purchase of that significance without consulting the other spouse is more than likely an indication of communication issues inside the home between the two.

Either that, or a lack of respect for one another.

Or they're so rich a car isn't a big purchase to them

But yeah, likely your scenario.

This. Especially if she's paying for it. How insecure are you people? I would have no respect- zip, zero, nada- for a woman if she was asking me for permission to buy something she is paying for. If she can afford it, get after it.

She brings her current car to the dealership for maintenance one afternoon and comes home with a new car with you having no real decision or idea about it until she pulls up in the driveway?

It's her car and her decision. I could care less. If she wants my advise I will give it but in the end it is her car not mine.

am I too old school to think I’d be pissed beyond belief in this scenario?

I am old school too.

I'd be asking my wife to please bring me to Sonic for a Cherry Lime-Aide in her new car.

I'm not sure how it's insecure. Pretty wild to me anyone in a marriage would make that kind of purchase without input from their partner. Goes for the husband too.

If my wife traded in her car today and bought a $250k McClaren then we would have a talk.

I wouldn't buy a car without consulting my wife either. I expect the same courtesy. Married people should make large financial decisions as a unit.

Let’s say you talked about it being somewhat time, it was a topic on the radar, but you’ve yet to go look or have any serious talk about it. She brings her current car to the dealership for maintenance one afternoon and comes home with a new car with you having no real decision or idea about it until she pulls up in the driveway?

Would you do it to your wife? If so, you have no reason to be upset. If you wouldn’t do it without speaking to your wife, I can easily see your reasoning of being upset.

But it sounds like they have a different type of relationship than you do, based on your description

This would be nice. I always hear about people "buying their significant others a car as a present". I don't have enough money to grasp this concept. Do they buy it outright with their own seperate money or foot the monthly finance aside from a joint account?

My wife is a trust fund kid. She buys stupid stuff, mainly expensive shoes, whenever she wants. Stuff often just shows up. Most recently a Porsche Cayenne. It is what it is.
