The programmers who developed the format preferred a pronunciation with a soft g (in homage to the commercial tagline of the peanut butter brand Jif, they supposedly quipped “choosy developers choose GIF”). However, the pronunciation with a hard g is now very widespread and readily understood

Oh, so the end user fricks it up and then thinks the programmer is an idiot? Nothing new here.

This is correct, however the creator pronounces it with "J" sound witch is strange.

Turns out to be a very successful troll for those who fell for it.

Most people will say it is pronounced with the J sound. However, the word it is derived from, "graphic" does not have a hard J sound.
There is also an existing file type of .jif

For these two reasons I will continue using the hard G when pronouncing it.

Is it that complicated? What does the letter "G" sound like to you?

I always laugh at this idiotic explanation. How do you pronounce the following?
giraffe
Georgia
giant
gentle
generate
germ
gist
geology
gym

So you say
I need to cut the jrass today?

and you pronounce "rat" like arrat?

Cuz saying the letter r sounds different than pronouncinj it in a word.

Gif sounds better than jif. I'll stick with gif, you do what ever you want...

Its pronounced just like it’s spelled. If it was jif it would be spelled jif.

Anyone who says hard g "gif" is a sociopath

Genuinely never heard any normal person IRL say it that way

the fact that it's "graphical interchange format" so it should be a hard g.

This is the answer.

I consider anyone that says Jif to be unintelligent.

The answer is with a hard g, like gift or gill or gizmo -- most English words that start with "gi" are pronounced with a hard g. Flip through a dictionary if you don't believe it.

Soft gi comes from Italian and other foreign languages. Others, like "gin" are corruptions of spelling that happened a long time ago before people cared about it. Gin comes from the Dutch word, genever....

I pronounce it like it's spelled. Gift minus the t.

If they wanted it to be pronounced the other way they should have used a j

I go with the creator, he makes the rules

He created it, but he was wrong.

People who say jiff are sheep, blindly following the false leader.

He should have paid more attention in English class instead of 'dickin around with computers if he wanted to make any sense.
