Stay out of the mall jewelry stores that sell a "collection". You know, where they have a design that's a line.
My wife visited a small, independent jeweler and picked out a ring design that has a very old look to it. It's unique. It's one of one. She's the only one that will ever have this design of ring. It wasn't that expensive either. She's cost conscious, I don't even remember how much it cost, but it was reasonable.
Guess what I'm saying is that it's not the size of the rock or the price, go for unique. That one of one design.
Married 13 years yesterday.

I told my husband to get mine used.
Don’t search the internet for images of such an item.

You will be a damn idiot to spend that much. Seriously, its the biggest scam out there. Then they convinced people that a ring should cost a certain percentage of their salary (I am sure some fall for it), but do yourself a favor and take $6k.. Take about $500 and go buy a ring and put the other $5500 in mutual fund. 20 years from now see which one was a better investment.

OP can also go to NYC for a weekend and hit up my peeps on 47th street. You can walk into one door, and be exposed to 30 different merchants selling loose stones in that door. It's similar to the souks in the middle east, where the army is standing guard at the literal vault door (at the 3 story mall of gems and gold), and you pick stones at one place, settings at another, etc. It's not as cheap as buying them in the middle east, but it's easy to cover up on a trip you bring her on. Always negotiate aggressively, it's NYC, and they're Jews, so they expect it, just not from goyim from out of town.
Don't take possession in NYC, have it shipped, and you don't pay NY/NYC sales tax. Yes, it's secure, and insured. Another benefit is that the 47th street vendors don't forget you. They'll sell you an engagement ring and band, and when you call to get baller diamond studs for your newborn daughter years later, they'll remind you when your wedding was.

As an OT Baller, I spent $12k 30 years ago. Yes, I'm old, but still an original OT Baller.

Buying an engagement ring or even a wedding ring is foolish. It doesn't make any sense whatsoever unless you're so wealthy that whatever you spend on a ring is a drop in the bucket money wise. Plus, it's not as if the ring has magical powers.
So if you're not wealthy, then save your money and put it to use somewhere else whether that's a down payment on a house, paying off debt, or simply investing it.

Spent $7K in 2000 for a nice ring.
This year spent $55K to upgrade for our 25th anniversary.
Choose wisely when picking a wife.

This. I just bought an engagement ring online from Grown Brilliance. I was able to design exactly what I was looking for. I don’t know if they are still running the special but I was able to get the band 20% off and they included a matching wedding band for “free”. The ring and diamond looks great. I spend around $2800 after the discount.

Well, if you ever hope to get it back, invest wisely.
The amount you should spend on an engagement ring depends entirely on your financial situation, priorities, and your partner’s preferences. The old “three-month salary” rule is largely outdated—most couples today base their budget on what feels reasonable and sustainable for them.
Maybe $5k-6$k on average?

Diamonds have little to no actual value. Don't believe me? Go buy one and then try to sell it. DeBeers has pulled the biggest con job of all time. It makes Ponzi and Barnum and Bailey look like amateurs.

If your girl is upset that you didn't spend x amount on a ring, run

The budget isn’t judged just by the number; it’s about the 4Cs. At $6,000 you have two paths: a smaller natural diamond with an excellent cut and eye clean clarity, or a larger lab-grown stone with great fire and symmetry. I went with Harper Tait Fine Jewellery (Hatton Garden, UK). They jumped on Zoom with me, showed certificates and 360 videos, and suggested two classic settings, solitaire and hidden halo. I chose the latter, and since they offer international delivery, the package arrived insured with an appraisal and all paperwork in order.

20 years ago I didn't have a nickel to my name. I put a $4k dollar ring from bluenile on a shiny fresh credit card. Best decision I ever made.
