Spirit is iffy. I've used them before and during the whole transition and process of the flight I felt myself mentally repeating "no whammys" over and over.

All flights from New Orleans over the past 7 months. Mostly SWA except US Air to Jamaica. All nonstop on SWA I think.

Probably around $350-$450 a ticket for domestic travel. But I've paid way more and way less.

I'll say it like i say in every airline thread:
It's clearly apparent that airlines are colluding to keep prices high. That's what happens when you only have 4 major carriers and the same investors in most of them.

I just had to have a flight changed 3 hours before I was supposed to board (work project). Flight just went from being free w/ company miles to costing the company $800 for the round trip.

I agree. What was consistently $275-315 as little as a year ago is now consistently $400-450.

No doubt. Especially doesn't make sense when gas has plummeted.

Flying nonstop between two hubs, between a major hub and a fortress hub, and even as O-D traffic from a hub is always expensive.
MEM-ATL or DTW-ATL is historically more painful than, say, BTR to PIT via ATL or MSY to OKC via DFW....both of which usually run about $300-$350 round trip.
Usually one specific airline controls the bulk of the traffic (and gates) in hubs, so they setup a sellers market. For passengers flying into and out of places like Little Rock, New Orleans, Knoxville, Austin, or Baton Rouge, the airlines have to compete for hub traffic so the tickets are more reasonable than flying into or out of a place like ATL, which is basically owned by Delta. I find that direct flights into and out of DFW are sometimes reasonable....and I suspect it's because Southwest has a competing hub in the same metro.
It's often cheaper to fly through Atlanta and make a connecting flight to another place entirely than to have a direct flight into Atlanta.

Honolulu-$750
I typically shop around, though. It's easier to find good prices when you don't have specific dates that you have to leave and come back on.

I flew round trip to Denver this past saturday for $63 out of Houston.
ETA: It was a special deal and it really spoiled me. I want to go back, but can't find anything cheaper than $196 round trip.

You can find good deals if you book far enough in advance. I saw round trip flights from New Orleans to New York for 200 bucks.

Almost a month late but this thread was recently brought to my attention. Flight prices have actually gone way down in recent months.
Also - there is no special/hidden/secret/best times to book a flight. That's just a myth.
However, there is "surge" pricing. Think who flies over the weeks to metropolitan cities the most? Employees that fly Sun night/Monday mornings and return Friday after work. So those days are almost always going to be more expensive. Also - when you want to go on vacation - when is the best time to fly out/in? Leave on Saturday come back on Sunday. Therefore: Sat, Sun, Mon and Fri almost always going to be more expensive.
Flying out of some cities on Monday will be cheaper. Think Vegas.
Cheapest days to fly is almost always going to be Tue/Wed/Thu.
For the layman, the ONLY way to get cheaper tickets is to be flexible on days. Apart from that your best bet is to check OTA (online travel aggregator) websites like Kayak first. Kayak will not show Southwest or JetBlue so you want to check those websites individually.
Google flights is a good option too. If you are a little more savvy (read nerdy/geeky) use ITA matrix, but thats not for the layman. PS: Google flights uses ITA matrix.
