I usually mention APs in those sort of thread but I am not sure it is the best purely financial option in LA.

1. child care is cheaper in LA than a lot of the country and APs are a national business to a degree

2. APs make more financial sense if you have more than one child. you generally pay more for extra children but the cost per goes down

One of the big benefits is they get sick less often so you don't have to go pick them up and miss work and you get sick less often. There are tons of benefits but the child doesn't get the same socialization and you are sharing your home with someone and you have to have the extra room.

I would do it over again in a heartbeat it simplifies life so much and get get more time with your kids at home. It can be cheaper but not likely in LA for just 1 child.

Lafayette area, $~700/kid. Oldest starts private school next year and it looks like that'll be a little cheaper.

We looked into it but got spooked by the testimonials.

It seemed like most people loved it, but there was substantial risk that the au pair you selected functions almost like an older child you are now responsible for.

Like yea they can help you out with the younger kids, but most do not drive, most have never set foot in America. Some of them may take a genuine interest in your children and helping you out as their primary focus, but you run the risk of getting someone who's real priority is just getting to America. Your priorities and their priorities may not align and you won't necessarily know that until you've gone through the lengthy and expensive process of getting them from their country to your house.

On the other hand, the woman we talked to about the program did warn us that the brazillian girls are much more um liberal with their lounge/swimwear. So you take the good with the bad I guess.

Currently $760/mo - 2 year old.

Next year we are moving to a PreK3 program… $13k/yr with summer off like a normal school schedule. So ~$1,300/mo

10k a year per kid. Not a top tier day care but a good one. They only shut down for like 9 days out the year. Jefferson parish.

My wife was a stay at home mom. (Kids are grown now) You have to know going in that you're going to make some sacrifices. Instead of a Tahoe, you'll be driving a Camry. Instead of a brand new house, you may need to get a fixer-upper. In the end it was totally worth it.

Between my wife, son, and in-laws, my grandson is almost one and has never been to a daycare. Hope we can keep him out forever, but my daughter wants to do mother's day out starting at 2 yrs old I think. We are fortunate to be able to do this.

Your kid is sitting in front of a tv most of the day and being taken care of by a former felon.

There is a 12 month waitlist at our daycare

If they wanted to they could bump the price and probably get it

Shits a beating. Makes private school look affordable

$3,300 a month for one toddler in daycare.

Au pairs are actually quite a bit cheaper than daycare in high cost of living cities.
