Dang, first time I've ever encountered a post that just got deleted. Kind of cool

But more importantly, please don't think its an investment at all. It will not appreciate.

I had a friend that worked in the biz. He told me this is how it works...

You fall in love & pay $10k (retail) for a diamond
You break up & sell the rock quick for $3k (dump value)
Jewelry buyer sells the rock to a distributor for about $5k
Distributor sells the rock to a retailer for about $7k
Retailer sells it to the next chump for $10k

It's a vicious cycle and a huge scam made up by jewelry retailers...That being said, I paid about $5k for mine. Got a family setting (stone had fallen out though )

Won't reveal the price because that's tacky but I will say a wholesaler is the only way to go.

Jesus, listening to some of you people make me NEVER want to get married. The OT is going to have me in an apartment with no food, no car, and the lights off. But my wife has a diamond on her finger though

Let's add twist to this discussion. Who financed and who paid cash?

Paid $10k for the engagement ring and another $2k for the band.
My ring was my grandfather's, so it was free. Paid cash.

After about 20 years, they only wear the band anyway. Gave her a second ring at 25 years. Cost a good bit of change, but at the same time, I bought a new offshore boat.

If thats the case, should I start a "Diamond trade" website? Charge 5-10 percent plus cost of verifying diamond class.

All I bought was the setting. Cost me about 7k. Used a family stone (hers) that was worth a hell of a lot more than that. Twearked out good on my end.

Went in planning to pay cash. They offered 0% financing. I took 0% and paid it off in 6 months. Kept the cash in a high interest checking account making 2%. I'm not afraid to say I financed. It was the smarter financial decision. As if buying a 12k ring could ever be associated with a smart financial decision

I'm guessing you have never tried to sell a diamond. They aren't worth half of what you paid for them.

Half might be a generous valuation.

Diamonds would be worthless if the market was not controlled by a cartel.
