Half might be a generous valuation. Diamonds would be worthless if the market was not controlled by a cartel.

Yep.

And wedding rings wouldn't be a thing without a brilliant marketing campaign by diamond selling companies

$2300 for my engagement ring
$600 for my wedding band (that perfectly matched my engagement ring)

Paid $30 for his tungsten ring that he wears everyday. Was given his grandfather's wedding band that he wears whenever we go someplace nice or when we go to his parents.

I love my ring and always get compliments from strangers on it. You don't have to spend a ton for a pretty setting.

I think the key is knowing the budget that works for you. Never finance a ring and if a chick knows your budget but is pushing you towards rings several thousand dollars over that budget.....don't marry her.

Honestly, you can get a really nice engagement ring through blue nile for $4k-$5k. Real Talk. Anything over $10k just seems really excessive.

Check out Russian CZ. Not sure if true, but Russian CZs are so well made that for a period of years DeBeers had a contract where they bought all Russian CZs produced up to about 5 years ago. I have a 2 ct pear and 2 ct oval and they are magnificent.

I'm guessing you have never tried to sell a diamond. They aren't worth half of what you paid for them

I definitely did not pay retail

Paid 800 for our whole wedding set. Both wedding bands and her engagement ring. All we could afford at the time. That was 11 years ago.

Some of you guys have me seriously considering never getting married. 10-20k for a damn ring is fricking ridiculous

My dad is a machinist, so I asked him to make our bands. They came out great and are very sentimental. I think my husband spent around $3.5k on my engagement ring, but we walked in and out of the store three different times until they came down to that. No need to ever pay what the sticker price says!
