How many people had stay-at-home Moms?

My mother worked until she had her first child, and from that point was a stay-at-home mom. I'm guessing that's pretty rare these days.
At the time it sometimes annoyed me because she was at every school function that parents could attend, but in retrospect I cherish it (she passed away after a long illness).
She pretty much ran the house, and everything was always immaculate and taken care of. If you left an empty glass on the counter more than about 30 seconds it would disappear
. She even mowed the yard and loved it -- after a while, many ladies on the block started following suit.
My house was the one where all the friends wanted to go. Can't recall the ratio of working/not, but the working probably grew over my school years.

I did until I was about 10. Pretty much all of my friends did too.
Mom started working and my parents got divorced a year later. Latchkey kid from there on out.

My mother worked during half of my childhood and I can remember how much better things were once she quit her job. My parents fought less, spent less money because she was able to cook more, the house was always clean, and she seemed happier.

I did until after the second divorce. Mom had to go to work then.

My mom worked her entire life -- I don't think that she would have been happy as a stay at home mom.
My husbands mom stayed home her whole life -- I have no doubt that she wouldn't have been happy working.
I've personally worked full time for a few years, not at all for a few years and then part time for MANY years with a super flex schedule. For ME, it was perfect. My kids have commented before that they were glad that I had the schedule that I did.

A lot of working moms seem like exhausted bitter people, too. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there are many unhappy people.
My wife worked until the first baby. She stayed home after that until the last went to school. She was home about 9 years full time, raised 4 kids, then worked part time until they were in high school. She was very happy.
Now she’s a grandma with a very active life, and she lives for seeing her grandchildren. She watches two of them two or three days per week, and we have more on the way. A happy woman, with a beautiful life.

I thought when i was a kid she seemed happy, then when i got in my late teens and older, i realized that my mom was miserable.
Her working would have helped he tremendously instead of living in a daily ground hog day

My mother was a teacher so we stayed at the neighborhood pool during the summer till about the age of 11 or 12 - then we started cutting yards etc.

My mom stayed home with us until we were in school, but she has always overseen the books at my parents' company in the evenings. Even when she was the "room mother" and volunteered at school stuff and then when she went back to work full-time in education, she was still overseeing the books.
We were very fortunate that she was able to do that.
