It was still pretty much the norm in the South in the 80s. I'd say 80% of people that I knew growing up had stay at home moms.

My mom was home with us until I was 8 or 9. I stayed home with my kids until the youngest was almost a year old. Happiest time of my life.

My mom was until I was 7 or so. She was usually home from work around 3:30 most days to get us to sports practices and whatnot, and she was usually able to get off work to attend school functions during the day.

He did it early on. After we got a riding mower she took over because she wanted to. What was he supposed to do when he came home and it was already done? I got the job when I was old enough -- at least during summer break.

I deal with stay at home moms all the time. 
Seriously though, they all have very wealthy husbands and have hired help to do all domestic work. We are not talking about the same situation many of us had going up. These women don’t have anything to do but hover over their children.

My neighbor was out of town so his wife decided to cut the small strip of grass in front of their house. She didn’t look overly happy about this especially considering she had two teenage boys. I told her that I was sorry about her sons’ injuries and hope they get well soon. She replied, “what are you talkin... oh, frick you” and kept mowing.

It was the norm when I was growing up. I think they all loved it. Once they got us off to school, they all got together for two or three cups of strong Community Coffee over some gossip and hen talk, and then went to work cleaning house. They could tear some housework up on all that caffeine. For years I thought that was why they named it Community Coffee.....lol.

Mine was a stay-at-home until HS then she worked part time at a local bookstore.

On a related note, when I’d stay home from school sick, I was always amazed at how regimented and efficient mom was. Her only breaks were to watch her one story(All My Children) and eat lunch.

My mom was a stay at home mom when I was a kid. She should have worked (even part time) considering how poor we were growing up.
From my personal experience growing up with a stay at home mom.....it made me want to NEVER be that. I wanted to always be able to function independently on my own if I had to.
