re: How far out does a destination have to be for you to fly there instead of drive?

A lot of it has to do with time spent traveling. Will I get somewhere in 8 hours after driving to New Orleans an hour or so before my flight then fly to the destination then sit and wait for my bags then sit and wait for a car rental or just drive my own car and get there in 10 hours for far less money?

8 hours is my cut off. I figure the time it takes to get to the airport through the lines etc. Its 2 hours to an international air port from my house.

If I have to spend the night while driving. Otherwise it’s more convenient for me to drive and be in control of where I’m going, when I’m going

Havent really thought about it before. From me, Orlando is 3 hours North, Key West 2 hours South, Tampa 3 hours west.
I'll drive to those three places. After that, the next places closest places I go to are Pensacola and Atlanta, each about 8-9 hours and no way in hell I'm spending 8-9 hours in a car when I can take an hour 20 minute flight.
I guess at 4 hours I would have to think about the 30 minute flight instead of 4 hours in the car. 5 hours plus, flying unless there is some compelling reason to have my car where I'm going.

The length of the trip and number of people traveling makes a big difference. A 12 hour drive isn't too bad if you are going to be at your destination for an entire week, will need a car at the destination anyway, and will save 4 flight tickets.

I should also add Fort Lauderdale airport is 20 minutes to my north and is a simple easy airport to get in and out of. I'll get there 30-40 minutes prior to takeoff, through security in 10 minutes and board 20 minutes after parking.
Miami is 40 minutes to the south and takes a bit longer to navigate.

I’m convinced the only people who fly from JFK to cities like Boston, Baltimore, DC, or Philly are either rich or really dumb and lazy (they can’t drive a car/no license).
It makes more sense to take the train. The Northeast is the only place in the country where travel by train actually works.

I enjoy driving and seeing the country. Typically if it's a big trip (visited my wife's family in Wyoming) we flew into Denver and then rented a car and drove to Alpine. So we got the best of both worlds -- a manageable flight and a beautiful, scenic road trip.

5 hours.
I’ll drive from New Orleans to Houston, Pensacola, Jackson, Birmingham, etc.
Anything further, I’m flying.

Yes, I quit driving to LSU games from Dallas in the late 80's. When I graduated, and moved out there in 1983, I drove four or five times. Flew after I got promoted to fries. Never was a problem to drive four hours to Monroe.

Over 7 and we are middle class also. We are flying to Dallas for the LSU game in a couple weeks

Longer than 12hrs, and I'll start thinking about flying. I typically only fly if someone else wants me to. I prefer the scenic route. If I'm by myself, there's a 95% chance I'm driving.
I will fly if I've only got to spend a few hours somewhere, and then come right back. Houston was the closest for that, and it was only like $45 on Spirit
