It's not that we don't get it. I get it. I made A's in math in college. I even get why. My problem, which is most people's problem with common core, is that the old method should be just as acceptable to get the right answer as the new method. It should be taught as an option, and not as THE only way.

Can only speak to my personal experience...all fundamentals/old ways, memorizations, etc. were done away with completely and abruptly. Others may have a different experience.

I agree, and it's how I figured out how to do complex math in my head, but from what I've seen in real life, common core math homework and tests are not this simple. It's probably teachers getting to cute with how they present it, but I've seen some homework assignments that are confusing as hell.

Also, personal experience.
My child and their classmates were moved completely to CC math in 3rd grade.
10 children from that grade transferred to a private school using the traditional techniques first, (They do intro some CC concepts later).
The school had to create a remediation class for all the students who had spent the previous 2 years in a CC curriculum.

I have minor in math and degree in CSC. Common Core is absurdly stupid with math.

We are 27th because we text everybody, sped included . Most other countries do not and some " select " students so it is apples and oranges really . We are superior to most other countries economically and technologically so kind of a mute point but they don't want you to know that.

So many people don't get this simple concept. Don't spend years teaching your child to do what a $.50 calculator can do. Teach them to understand why it gets the result that it does. The jury has been in for a long time on the effectiveness of the old method and its product is parents who don't understand any other way of doing a simple math problem but the one that they were taught.

106,900 + 100= 107,000
107,000 + 42,000 = 149,000
149,000 + 265 = 149,265
31+100+42000+265= 42,396
And really the first two equations could easily be combined into one step as could the second two, but I wrote them out to show it all step by step. Takes about 30 seconds, oh noooooo!

honestly, teaching young kids these methods, you're execting too much for them to derive the 31, 42,000 in their heads. maybe i'm biased cause my girl's only in 1st grade.

so to get the 31 in the first part above, you had to do some sort of math in your head. How does a kid get here without all of the other BS after that?
I mean, I get the method, but it like making things more difficult than they need to be. Like TPS reports.

I understand it just fine. What they do in common core with multiplication actually looks like a better method IMO. But the stuff with addition and subtraction looks more complicated than a simple math problem needs to be.

If parent's don't understand the utility that common core is teaching they immediately hate it.
A lot of parent's don't understand the utility that common core is teaching.
I figure out for myself about 10 years ago (so this is in college) how to do math the easy way...the way common core is teaching. And I did it out of necessity!
