Probably still works.

hahahahaha, making easy shite complicated so stupid people think they are accomplishing something by subtracting.
Posted on 9/22/15 at 7:27 pm to Hester Carries
Why don't they teach these little motherfrickers useful shite like managing debt, balancing a checkbook, etc.
Math is math. Subtract that shite and then quit doing math. Don't make more of it for yourself

But it is really just a communist conspiracy
Typical liberal tactic, change the fulcrum of the argument.
Point was that Bill Ayers is neck deep in this. Are you OK with him deciding what your child learns or your grand children learn?
Do you doubt that Bill Ayers is a communist radical?

I taught myself what is essentially the common core method when I was in grade school. I had the best math scores in my class until 8th grade. True story.
I laughed I admit it.

It is a better way to learn, so that's how I look at it instead of just attacking shite that doesn't matter as a big conspiracy.
I'm judging the system, not the creator of it.
Not the C word. Oh Noooss

IM sorry but in the real world, on a daily basis, you arent walking around carrying the 2, bringing down one side, adding that shite together.
The brain naturally adds and subtracts in smaller steps...like common core. Im against forcing kids to do math in a way that makes them sacrifice the way their brains uniquely works, but 99% of you probably add/subtract shite like this in your head.
are we trying to teach kids to figure out approximate tipping amounts or are we teaching them to do math? because in most real world work math, saying "i dunno, i didn't carry the two and shite" won't cut it.

What the hell is the point of memorizing math? Even a retarded monkey can memorize something. From someone who has a math minor, teaching the principles of math is way more condusive to a kid becoming productive with numbers later in life
The irony of saying kids are too lazy to memorize is outstanding. Memorizing is the lazy way. Math is not meant to be memorized, it is meant to be understood

So you are a conservative communist? Gotcha.
ETA: I will take your word that you are not a liberal. But you still used their tactic very well.

Obviously you take math pretty seriously, but check out common core English and spelling. You could use some help understanding why you spelled conducive incorrectly.

It tries to teach dumb people how smart people think. I'm sure most of us developed a shortcut in our head for this problem to answer the question that didn't involve longhand subtraction. Mentally I solve this saying 3, 23, 31 in my head (counting up). The fact that the mental process is written down in longhand gets everyone's panties in a wad.

People who don't get this method are most likely the people who aren't that great at doing math in their heads.
The example in the OP isn't the best example.
Think of it more in the terms of multiplying 23 and 14.
Most people would do this this way:
_1
_23
x14
_92
230
322
Common Core teaches kids the way you would do it in your head.
14*20 = 280
14*3 = 42
280+42=322
No one taught me how to do that second method. I get math, so I learned it on my own.

I've forgotten a lot of multiplication table info. I got an engineering degree without it. The strategy however was paramount to getting that far. Many aremt used to these methods, so its foreign to them. But I really dont think it's terrible. If a kid didnt know how to do standard subtraction, and the oaremt wasnt ever taught that way either, their would likely be people bitching about that method. It is really only a problem because parents cant grasp it right away since they werent taught it. But theres no reason a 4th grader cant start being introduced to these concepts.

English and writing can suck my nuts. Don't care at all how that is being taught. But the principles around common core math is grounded in a very well thought out plan. For Yall interested, go check out how Asians learn math. They would wipe their arse with memorizing times tables

We agree!
What should they be taught in math in grades 1-3 and the rest of their 4th grade year?

I'm the same way. Of course, learning this on my own showed me to question and problem solve everything. First I had to understand what I was doing, how and why, then I could develop my own shortcuts.
Common Core seems to be trying to teach creative problem solving to everyone rather than teaching fundamentals to everyone and letting the problem solvers figure that shite out on their own.
Figuring out the short cuts and the other ways to do things is important as well in my opinion.
Do they teach kids the fundamentals first then these common core things? Or are they doing away with the fundamentals?
