Why don't you try that explanation again.

Sorry. Typed it wrong:

"What is the least common MULTIPLE of 12 and 56"

Is your criticism really that you would prefer students to memorize something than understand it?

The most basic parts are better off memorized. You should know off the top of your head that 6 x 7 = 42 or 9 - 5 = 4.

Public school entitled-educator foolishness.

Not exactly.

Most educators I know personally are against it.

If any on here really want to know what CC intended goal is it is fairly easy to research and connect the dots.

The main forces behind the creation of CC are Bill Ayers, yes the domestic terrorist, and his friends.

If you are interested, research CC and also the Annenberg Challenge in which Obama was a part. The Ayers crowd could actually not care less about the math our children are being taught...they are targeting the social sciences and literature.

BTW, despite large infusions of cash through the Annenberg Challenge and all the promise of the liberals of raising test scores etc., an independent audit discovered that almost all grants went to Social Science and Literature, virtually ignored math and science and test scores never improved. So we are going to use the same people to roll out the concept nationwide.

BTW: This played a part in my pulling my kids out of public school and sending them to private school.

Sadly my grandchildren will not have that option. Why? The liberal elite education establishment has taken the man charged with organizing and delivering CC to K-12 and now placed him over the college boards. So we are fast moving towards a system of education that will force anyone who wants to be accepted to college to follow a nationalized curriculum.

Make no mistake. Bill Ayers and his communist minded elite played a monumental role in creating a "palpable" nationalized curriculum. Do you think he intends to use this influence over our nations children for the benefit of advancing our country forward or for eventually indoctrinating a nations children with the radical, communist mindset?

And if you don't think it can and will happen then

Typing on a phone while taking care of a one year old, but basically this is teaching building blocks on fundamental math strategy for solving problems. If a kid makes it to college with this strategy of solving problems already understood, they can focus on much more advanced topics instead of learning later. I've personally always looked at problems this way and excelled in math. Looking at everything as a rule or a multiplication table pushes memorization and not "learning"

That's right, but I was surprised they're doing that level math in 4th grade...frankly, I like it....it wasn't like that when I was 10.

. I guess it's not that much different than how I do a lot of math in my head. There are little tricks like that that make things quicker and some combinations of numbers that are easier to add together for some reason that seems to make it quicker.

It's basically how my dad taught me to do math fast in my head as a kid. Similar with multiplication and division. Break it into easy problems.

So funny and true. My wife can't do it AT ALL and it takes me reading about 5 pages back in his book to make sure I'm not sending him back to school like a dunce with wrong answers.

I agree to an extent.

But many of these building blocks become almost abstract in their application. The average grade for kids to be able to grasp purely abstract concepts is 8th grade. (Why Algebra/pre algebra is offered in the 7th though 9th grades)

I think these concepts are much easier to comprehend once the basic memorizations required in simple math are ingrained. In my personal experiences, the memorizations have been ignored and students are thrown head first into these concepts without regard to brain development and their ability to grasp the concept, (different than intelligence)

We all know the best way to develop future mathematicians is to have them leave school in the 2nd grade saying, "I cant do math."

Memorization will come with repetition anyway. I don't think knowing the answer before hand will help with the comprehension of basic math fundamentals.

But it is really just a communist conspiracy

IM sorry but in the real world, on a daily basis, you arent walking around carrying the 2, bringing down one side, adding that shite together.

The brain naturally adds and subtracts in smaller steps...like common core. Im against forcing kids to do math in a way that makes them sacrifice the way their brains uniquely works, but 99% of you probably add/subtract shite like this in your head.
