We insulate them from it. I explain to them the potential dangers, but they are completely separated from it. It is a huge motivation for why my wife and I work as hard as we do.

This is the new American Dream.
It’s no longer just the belief that anyone can improve their life through hard work, personal responsibility, and determination.

Now, for a lot of families, it’s working hard enough to buy distance, safety, and a buffer from the violence and disorder everyone is told not to notice.

Drive them around in the hood and say see these people …. Stay away from em.

Take them to nice part of town and say see these people move here and love amongst these folks.

Just curious if you let them find out for themselves or try to guide them.

When parents “let them find out for themselves”

When parents guide them

Here’s the thing, your kids aren’t going “find out for themselves” on anything, especially culture. Someone will absolutely guide them. It up to you as their parent to make sure that guide is you.

In fact, that’s what being a parent is all about, guiding your kids into be honest, happy, productive, well adjusted and responsible adults. To do any less is the most selfish and cruel form of child neglect a parent can ever inflict on their child. Because if you don’t guide them, you’re setting them up for a life of failure.

my dad once told me, once you start paying taxes (work for a living), you will understand why I say the things I say

They watch the same videos of all these teen takeovers as the rest of us, there’s really not much I need to teach them

Mine has a friend here in Colorado that is black as sin and I try to warn her of those animals but it falls on deaf ears.

You really don’t have to teach much, at least in BR. We’ve played enough youth sports for their solid introduction to other cultures in southern LA, and have told them enough of where not to go to continue shoring that up.

Unless you live in some hamlet somewhere, it’s tough to not see the blatantly obvious dangerous situations that provide ample teaching opportunities.

Well, you know what they say about what drives the real estate market.

You really suck as a poster, and it is sad the OT people are too ignorant to realize it.
