Handles down on everything except knives.
I don't want all those old food particles to settle in the basket on the user end of the utensil.

Handles down like a normal person. Dishwashers today are powerful enough to clean through the basket. Also, why would you want to touch all over the clean place where people gonna eat from, instead of hold it

Handles down because handles aren't the dirty part.

Spoons - handles down so there is more room in the basket

Knives/forks - handles up so you don't poke yourself loading/unloading

I've always thought that the silverware basket took up too much valuable space in my dishwasher so when I got a new dishwasher I made sure to get one with the silverware "basket" on the door. These do not really give you a choice.

I alternate. Handles up first group, then if I have more handles down. I don't want my forks to line up and not get clean so if I can do 8 handles down and 4 handles up I will

We don’t. We dump the basket on the counter, or directly in the utensil drawer, then sort. Chef’s knives, etc. are on the top rack.

So the first thing you do with your clean silverware is put your hands all over the part you put in your mouth or cut food with?

Handles up on everything. That way the eating/food surface of the utensils never get touched.

It doesn’t matter for me. My shitty arse apartment dishwasher ain’t cleaning it either way. I just put coffee cups and my coffee pot and masker in there once a week to run it so it doesn’t start to stink.

Why in the ever living frick would you put a chef's knife in the dishwasher? Do you not have a soul?
